I cannot send email from my BT email address using the talktalk network. I have removed anti virus completely, rebooted several times, triple checked all the settings etc.
Some of the time emails are successfully sent even when anti virus program is installed and then randomly emails fail to send. Emails are always received without problem. When i use a mobile phone as a hotspot i have no problem in sending so i think it is not Outlook fault - i have repaired outlook (office 365) using both the quick and online repair and used scanpst and scanned the pst and though there were errors scanpst said, scanpst said it repaired the errors. (theres no info on what the errors are).
Im at a complete loss, any help welcomed. Cheers all.

the only constant connection method to bt server via Outlook i use is the tt network. It worked in the past for years without problem, then it failed a few times over the years but came back working even without me messing about with the port numbers, etc. Often if it failed during the day, it was back working the next day - as if by magic. I was unaware about port numbers until recently so they meant nothing to me so i kept well away.
There are several other posts about tt's servers going off / playing up within the last week or so. A poster on this thread linked a link to tt's server url - it works for him but a 404 page error appeared for me (its irrevalent that i have no tt email address as simply i never got anywhere close to entering any email address etc) All other websites i surf to appear normally, i ran a full av scan and 100 clear so the 404 error page is yet another odd tt situation.
Its strangely odd situation that i just cannot understand - eg how did the port number change by itself and STARTTLS turned off - i certainly didnt mess again with them since i was happy the problem was fixed.

I thought we had it sorted out.
You have a BT email address/account and use Outlook email client to connect
TT does not come into it.
I have a TT email address/account and use 587 and STARTTLS with my email client.
What we thought previously, is that the TT and BT outgoing email servers, both use 587 and STARTTLS
Apparently now, BT outgoing email server, is no longer cooperating.

back to square 1 again, Folks. TT not accepting 587 and STARTTLS again.
at my wits end with this, its very trying to say the least
on 13-07-2025 02:09 PM
seems that tt and BT allow 587 and starttls

Glad to see you got it sorted. So it was not TalkTalk related as such, just a question of getting the Outlook/BT mail settings right.

So, both the TalkTalk and BT outgoing servers comfortably use Port 587 with STARTTLS

I solved my BT email not sending on the tt network - i ignored BT saying dont use STARTTLS - used 587 as the port as well and old in the Outbox email sent and received with an auto generated Outlook Test message

I solved my BT email not being sent in Outlook on the tt network problem - i ignored BT saying dont use STARTTLS and used port 587 - successfully sent old in the Outbox email and received an auto generated Outlook Test message

hi, i looked at the server settings and had a playabout with all the settings - i had a email test to myself from myself stuck in the Outbox (from a few days ago with a date and time so i knew if it was old or current email). When i went to the Manually Repair server settings and ignored BT saying dont use STARTTLS the settings screen accepted 587 and did its work with a Repaired message appearing - and when i checked email in Outlook i got my Outbox email and auto generated Outlook Test message - so far it works . Phew!

yes outgoing emails remain in the Outbox - theres a message on the lines of "the connection to the server was interrupted".
I shall look at the port number, i think it defaults to 465 and will not accept 587 - i am almost 100% certain it was 587 before i started messing about - as the server connection interrupted message kicks in and boots me to a failure state the 587 will not stick. What does telnet do? is it a purely a CMD type testing program or a requirement for email via Outlook (perhaps i had it installed but it got deleted??

Do sent emails remain in the Outbox folder?
What is the port number for the outgoing server set to in the account settings?
I have just attempted connecting to the BT outgoing mail server using telnet in a Command Prompt window.
telnet mail.btinternet.com 587results in a 'service ready' response, but
telnet mail.btinternet.com 465does not.
If telnet is not already installed, then this is how to install it on Windows OS:
- go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off;
- find and check the box next to Telnet Client, then click OK

Hi, @HPMan1
I wouldn't have a clue, but my link to https://apps.talktalk.co.uk/appsuite/, works perfectly.
That allows me to log in to any TalkTalk email address.
You say that your emails are done via BT.
So what's your connection with TalkTalk?
Are you a TalkTalk broadband customer, but a BT email customer?
on 10-07-2025 03:29 PM
Hello @HPMan1. Since you can access your BT webmail but not through the Outlook client, it seems the issue is related to a third party, so please reach out to Outlook support again. In the meantime, we have been advised to wait as we continue to investigate and collect more examples of this incident. We will update you soon.

hi Bill, out of interest , i clicked on the link you provided and a 404 unknown page error screen appeared. (i dont have a tt email address but how would the website know from the off that i didnt?) Clearly something re email of all colours / suppliers is badly wrong on the tt network

Hey there, @HPMan1. I understand. Please allow me to get back to you as I will need to escalate this since you've mention other people issues.

I do not have a tt email and dont want one as everyone knows me from my bt email address.
on 10-07-2025 10:53 AM
i can use bt webmail successfully but i dont want to do so as all my email threads are in Outlook. A quick look as i was logging in to reply to you show several other people posting about failure to send email using the tt network from a few days ago - it is clearly a tt problem.

Okay, we can try to enable the BT webmail site if you do have or can access your BT emails that way like we have our TalkTalk webmail shared by @Billx.
