I'm pretty sure other people have asked this before. but back in July 2024 my outlook account stopped receiving or sending emails from my talktalk.net account. I've spent many hours trying to resolve this issue. In fact only yesterday I had an extensive online chat with an Microsoft operative, who with my permission, took access to my laptop, and spent some 45 minutes flying through the settings and account. all to no avail. again today I've been attempting to solve the problem. With no success, indeed I tried to sign out of my TT account details, so to sign back in, and got the message "account not recognised. I would be too bothered but I usually transfer documents etc from my PC to my iPad via Outlook. So I've given up the ghost.

Hi @RG1947

If you want, I can send you a guide that I have written on setting up & using Outlook in Windows 11. It covers how to set up a talktalk.net email address within it correctly. If you want it, let me know.

Hi @RG1947

I spoke to a friend who uses an iPad but they just use the mail app iOS comes with. I was going to install Outlook on my Android in the hope it was the same as the iOS version, but if you are not going to bother, neither will I.

I can help a lot with the Win 11 one, which I thought you mentioned before.

Hi Kieth

I’ve decided that it’s not worth the trouble trying to get Oulook set up on my iPad, and for the amount of usage I would use, I’m going to dump the app. And try and see if I can sort out the problem on my Win 11 laptop.

Hi @RG1947

I have also just found this info, will it help you?

To verify or change IMAP settings in Outlook for iOS, navigate to Settings > Accounts > [Your Email Account] > Account SettingsYou'll find options to adjust incoming and outgoing server settings, along with other account details.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  1. Open Outlook for iOS: Launch the Outlook app on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Access Settings: Tap your profile icon in the top left, then tap the gear icon (Settings).

  3. Select Your Account: Choose the specific email account you want to check or modify.

  4. Account Settings: Tap on the email address to view the account details and settings.

  5. Verify IMAP Settings: Look for sections related to the incoming mail server (IMAP) and outgoing mail server (SMTP).

@RG1947 is using the Outlook app for iOS, I have no experience with this at all. From a quick Google search, I found this. I have no idea if it will help:-

Set up an IMAP account manually in Outlook for iOS

  1. In Outlook for iOS, go to Settings > Accounts Add Account > Email Account.

  2. Enter email address. Tap Add Account.

  3. If you get the Select your email provider screen, choose IMAP.

  4. Enter your password and toggle on Use Advanced Settings.

  5. Enter the server setting information needed. Tap Sign In.

I am waiting to find out if this will help him.

Hi Billx

I’ve just sent a PM to KF stating that I have reloaded the outlook app on my iPad, it doesn’t even show the settings cog!

I’m just about totally cheesed off with the whole damned issue.😡

Hi, @RG1947

To see the email config of Outlook:

click the Cogwheel on the top right
--> Outlook settings will open in the 'Accounts' tab
--> click 'Manage' on the right of your email address --> here is the email config page

It should show the following:

IMAP Configuration
Incoming email server:   mail.talktalk.net   Port 993
Secure connection type: SSL/TLS

SMTP Configuation
Outgoing email server:    smtp.talktalk.net   Port 587
Secure connection type: STARTTLS

Are the settings all correct?

Hi KF,

Are you referring to me to DM you, or Kanya?

I wouldn’t know how to in any case?

You have the advantage over me @kanya-TT as I cannot see @RG1947's profile. It might be a config issue or a fault with these servers, affecting some users (mine are fine). If the OP would like to PM me (to protect privacy) a screenshot of the email config in Outlook, I will check & advise on it.

Thank you @KeithFrench. I would assume the email in question is a TalkTalk domain email as per @RG1947's profile. So the solution would be to update the IMAP/SMTP settings?

Hi @RG1947 @kanya-TT

There are two possible issues here, there was a Microsoft issue that caused Outlook not to work for some people in the last couple of days. Just because the OP is working OK via webmail, does not rule this out as being a TalkTalk issue at all. I don't think the customer said if his email address was a talktalk.net domain, but whichever domain, TalkTalk has to keep the IMAP/SMTP servers functioning OK. Otherwise email clients will not work.

As far as I know if you are able to use your emails using TT webmail, it indicates that there is no problem on our end but rather with the client App. I can run checks with you to explore a possibility that this could be an issue on our end, but it's highly likely to yield no results. Unless my co- star @KeithFrench can advise us otherwise?

Hi Kanya,

yes all is well, sending and receiving from TT Webmail. No problems on my IPad via Apple Mail. No joy whatsoever on my laptop, or IPad Outlook apps.

I’ve tried deleting app on iPad, reinstalled it, and still no joy. I also deleted it on my Win11 laptop, tried to open apps on both, only to get error message “email address not recognised.

As mentioned in my post, Outlook tech took over my laptop, and after about 20 - 30 minutes he abandoned his attempts.

I assume Outlook is an embedded app on my Win11, when bought, as now when I tried to reinstall, Microsoft was wanting to charge me for it.

So yeah, I’m absolutely cheesed off with it🙄🙁😡

Hey @RG1947. I understand that you can't use your Outlook account client App. Can you send or receive emails at the moment when using TalkTalk Webmail?
