My lineone.net and tiscali.co.uk email account are no longer working.

I get the error message "Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified".

I have not changed any settings recently and everything was working fine last week.

Both accounts are pop3 and I have set them up with the latest information from TalkTalk.

Machine is Windows 7 32 bit and I am using Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

As Mailwasher version 7 supports TLS1.2 secure encryption then as Mailwasher is accessing the mailbox I agree that the proof is right there that IMAP / POP3 access is active and you'll not need to call upon TalkTalk Support to check the mailbox.

So, all that remains is to either use a currently supported version of Outlook or move on to using Thunderbird or other software of your choice to replace the deprecated Outlook 2007.

Let us know if you need any additional help.

Ah! It all makes sense now thank you for explaining.

I use a 3rd party email filter called Mailwasher Pro which is able to read from both of my email accounts (with the same settings in use from Outlook).

As Mailwasher is able to access my accouints without issue I don't think that my accounts are blocked.

It is quite possible that I did not use Outlook from 28th June until 3rd July as I am able to delete spam/unwanted emails in Maiwasher without needing to open Outlook for this.

I will, however, try Thunderbird as you have suggested and I will let you know if it is successful.   It may be a few days as I can manage for now with webmail.

Thank you for your help with this.

I hate computers.

Best regards, Tony

No worries. You'll understand then when I tell you that TalkTalk renewed the security certificate for TalkTalk Mail on 14 May and at the same time removed the deprecated SHA1 certificates at long last. What happened subsequently on 28 June is that TalkTalk logged out all connections to the mail platform. So when your email client next looked for a security certificate found the new certificate for which it does not have the required cipher suite.

TalkTalk have been promoting the use of secure mail for some considerable time and requiring users to update settings and or upgrade deprecated email software to ensure only secure mail settings are in use.

So either there was a period between 28 June and 3 July when your email software wasn't in use, or, on 3 July, TalkTalk removed IMAP / POP3 access from your mailbox. That's what we're trying to prove by seeing if Thunderbird will work as expected.

Thanks, I will look into it.

I am 70 years old now but worked in the computer industry for 40 years initially as an assembly level programmer, senior programmer, software analyst, systems manager and finally running my own computer software house in Jersey, Channel Islands providing complete bespoke systems for major banking/financial organisations.

I have worked with every version of MS Windows from version 3.0 up to and including version 7.

I have not upgraded further as I have very expensive hardware which does not have any drivers available for Windows 10 or higher and I simply cannot afford to junk perfectly good equipment.

As my email account(s) have been working perfectly in Outlook 2007 it is clear that the sudden failure of such is because something has changed at TalkTalk. My system has not been modified in any way so the error is not at my end.

Not your fault I know - I am just amazed at the way internet providers can make changes without any care, consideration or notification to the customers who pay to use their services.   Appalling behaviour really.

"If it ain't broken don't fix it".

Apologies for the moan,

Regards, Tony

You will not be able to use Outlook 2007. The Outlook upgrade path is Outlook 2016 - Outlook 365.

I'd like you to download and set up Thunderbird as an IMAP secure email account. That will not have any effect on the mailbox contents and will prove that your mailbox is working normally.

Many thanks for your reply.

Would it be possible for support to check my mail boxes before I download Thunderbird?

I would much prefer using Outlook if at all possible.

Thanks again.

Let us know if Thunderbird is connecting to your mailbox. It should connect without a problem. However, if not then let us know and TalkTalk Support can check your mailbox to see if it's been restricted to webmail only access

Hello.

Thank you for your message.

I know that I am using an outdated o/s and email program but I don't understand why my email suddenly stopped working 2 days ago.

I used the Microsoft fixit and applied the windows kb3140245-x86 update to allow TLS 1.2 several months ago and everything has been fine until now.   I have not made any other changes to my system this end so it would appear that TalkTalk have done something at their end recently.

Not to worry, webmail is working and available - I just liked being able to store my emails on my computer without being on-line.

Thanks again, Tony

Thank you for your help with this.

I did apply the Microsoft fixit for TLS 1.2 and everything was working fine until this happened.

I will try using Thunderbird as you have suggested.

Many thanks, Tony

TalkTalk Mail does not support Outlook 2007. Do you intend to retain Windows 7 or upgrade?

If keeping Windows 7 then download the free Windows 32bit version of Thunderbird as that is supported on Windows 7 and contains its own TLS 1.2 security ciphers so is not dependent on the outdated Windows 7.
