Outgoing email password

My normal password works OK for TT webmail, for logging in to this community and for my Thunderbird outgoing email using the obsolete port 25 with no security.  On changing to the latest port 587, STARTTLS, Password settings the password is not accepted and it asks for another try.  I have tried several times so it is not finger trouble!  Restarting does not help.  Reverting to the obsolete settings outgoing email works perfectly without asking for the password even for the first time after resetting.  Given the update warnings for Feb 23 rapid help would be appreciated.

Thank you Gondola for clear instructions, outgoing emails are now working.  The outgoing server at the bottom of the list still just gives the default server and it was not clear to me that the specific server is listed by selecting the a/c name not Server Settings.  I was working from the settings in the 2 sided email sent to me which did not mention User Name so I did not add the full email address, the list on your first reply does cover it as does your last reply.

Maybe a lot of time and hassle could be avoided all round by assuming customers do not know this sort of detail when TT are writing initial instructions.  Typically I did not know server access had been blocked so I put in time trying to send emails until I asked for help and was told about the block and that I would have to make contact to have it cleared.

I'm not sure someone trying to sort via TT would get very far, so thanks to the Community!

Ady said your email accounts had full functionality so they will work.

I'm therefore diagnosing that the SMTP outgoing server(s) you have set up in Thunderbird have the wrong password for the sending account. Each email account must be authenticated with its own password and that password must be the same in the outgoing SMTP server.

OK, so because each email address needs its own outgoing SMTP server setup you can add an SMTP server in the Outgoing SMTP server list.

Then on the Account Settings page, select the email account in the left pane and you'll see at the bottom of the main screen the ability to see and select from the drop down list the outgoing SMTP server settings for that email account.

The description needs to identify the email account

Server name: smtp.talktalk.net

Port: 587

Connection security: STARTTLS

Authentication method: Normal Password

User name: The full email address for the email account

Having linked each email account to dedicated outgoing server settings, when you send mail you'll be asked for the password. Tick to remember the password before entering the correct password.

24 hours later but no reply, a shame because the earlier replies have been quick and constructive - except that I still cannot send emails from Thunderbird because the outgoing server will not take the passwords.  There are clearly many others in the same position, it is time for TT to get to grips with this problem - perhaps talk me through it on my landline?

Hi Ady,

It has now reverted on both a/c to Send not accepting p/w and saying check p/w & a/c settings.   At least on the first a/c it accepted the new p/w when going on to Inbox, on the second a/c I am not sure.

Thanks Ady - but it is still not working.  On the first a/c initial login accepted the new p/w but 'Send' on both a/cs shows the Send box with the blue line staying indefinitely.  On the second a/c I had an email with click here to verify the a/c, this came up with error 404.  The click here for login put me into the community a/c.

On the a/c settings information sent there seems to be a suggestion that the Outgoing server should differ between the a/cs, but I cannot see how.  Or is this for a/cs with different providers?

Incoming mail is not affected by any of this.

Thanks for the help, I have changed passwords and entered a/c settings for POP3, I may go to IMAP once I have dealt with saved messages.  I have put my main email address into my profile but could not see any way of adding the second except in generally available boxes - how do I add that, in the your eyes only box?  Or does the first one enable you to see the second?

Hi charlie-golf, please add the affected mail address to private notes in your community profile and I'll get it added to the list.

My understanding is that Port 25 will be blocked from 23 February to finally put a stop to the use of insecure mail settings to send TalkTalk mail from email clients like Thunderbird.

Thunderbird will not authenticate the password for secure settings until TalkTalk restore full access for your mailbox. The continued use of insecure and out of date legacy settings in email software / email apps has resulted in your mailbox being restricted to webmail only access.

On updating the Thunderbird email software Server Settings (incoming mail) and outgoing SMTP server settings, for any active mailbox that does have IMAP / POP3 access, you'll possibly be asked to accept a new certificate (yes, accept) and to enter the email password when using Thunderbird to read or write emails so have the current password ready (when you've set a new password). Tick to remember or save the password before entering it. Each email address needs to have it's own settings and its own outgoing SMTP server because outgoing authentication requires the email account User Name and Password.

User Name is the full email address and Password is the email password.

  • Start Thunderbird
  • Select the Thunderbird triple line menu top right
  • Select Account Settings from the menu
  • Select Server Settings under the email account name in the left side panel
  • Use the entries as shown in the table
  • Look down the left side panel to Outgoing Server SMTP
  • Select Edit to update the Outgoing server settings as per the lower entries in the table below - remember to select the correct Outgoing Server for the correct email account.

Thunderbird email client settings for all TalkTalk Mail domains including talktalk, tiscali and their sister email addresses are:

Account Type  IMAP secure Email Account
User Name Full email address
Password Email password
Incoming mail server (IMAP) mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port 993
Incoming Connection Security SSL/TLS
Authentication Method Normal Password
Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security STARTTLS
Authentication Method Normal Password

After you've changed the settings and after TalkTalk have restored access, that I've requested for you, have another go.
