This is where the confusion starts because I don't see what that Outlook icon links to.

Does it link to Outlook.com that you've just shown me the screenshot of i.e. Microsoft's webmail service? NB Microsoft removed the ability to connect non subscriber non Microsoft accounts to Outlook.com on May 10, 2021, but accounts connected before May 10, 2021, will continue to sync. So you could have added a TalkTalk account to Outlook.com at some time before May 10 2021.

I'm now guessing that's the case because it would explain the confusion between Outlook.com, Microsoft's webmail service and Windows Mail that's the standalone email software bundled with Windows 10 / 11 and that I showed a screenshot of the Sync Settings in the previous topic.

Or does the icon link to stand-alone Outlook email software like Outlook 2019, for example, that may have been the version of Outlook supplied as part of the Microsoft Office bundle on the laptop in 2020?

This sort of confusion won't get any easier because in 2024 Microsoft are replacing Windows Mail with a product called Outlook for Windows. So, "I use Outlook" does that mean Outlook for Windows, Outlook.com or Outlook 2019 - all different!

In response to... Had you also previously added a TalkTalk Mail account to Outlook.com during the period that Microsoft still allowed the adding of  external email accounts?

I don't really understand the question.  All I can really say is that I access my TalkTalk mail account from an Outlook icon on my Desktop.  It was set up when this laptop was new, in early 2020.

What you're showing me is Outlook.com which is Microsoft's version of webmail accessed via a web browser not via Outlook 365 / Outlook 2021 etc that is accessed via dedicated email software.

You'll normally have set up a Microsoft email account in Outlook.com and if you select the name Outlook top left you'll see a panel with the account email addresses. You did say in your previous topic that you had outlook.office365.com in the mail settings so that does now explain what's going on as you'll see that in the Settings > Sync Email > POP and IMAP settings for the Microsoft email account.

You'll need to retain that Microsoft account in order to sign in to Microsoft websites.

Finally worked out how to send this to you.  This is the unused account.  Can I just delete this to solve the problem?  If yes, how do I delete it?

As I said to you on 8 September, "when I see exactly what you see I'd know what's going on."

My general advice is to backup your wanted mail messages that aren't on the mail server. Microsoft - Backup your email

Delete all TalkTalk Mail accounts on Outlook

Start afresh setting up just the TalkTalk Mail account in Outlook

Kept on fiddling around and eventually got Outlook working again.

I was wondering if the following has something to do with the problem I had... it looks like I have two Outlook accounts linked to the same email address - one links to a TalkTalk server which is the one I use, and the other is related to Microsoft365 which I do not use and which has no emails in it.  Do I need to delete the Microsoft365 one?  If I do that, I would first have to be sure that I wouldn't lose access to my TalkTalk Outlook email or lose all my email history.
