Update from POP to IMAP in Mac mail

Hello! I've been asked to change my POP access to IMAP but I've tried multiple times previously and I can't get it to work. I've used the support article and all my settings seem to be correct. Is anyone else having this problem/know how to fix it?

I have a legacy onetel email which I can still access via webmail so I know the password is correct 🙂

Thanks

Nicely done. All good to go.

I've requested that full access is restored for the email address mailbox in your Community profile Private notes.

TalkTalk Support will respond here and access returned within a couple of days after that. Until then use TalkTalk Mail webmail via an up to date Internet browser to keep in touch with email contacts.

Hello!

I'm starting with the POP version :).

I think these settings are correct - I've also added a screenshot of the server settings.

There's advanced POP settings, wonder if it needs something in it? Tried to add the TSL certificate it offered there but it didn't seem to help...

Please look at the table I've given for the correct settings.

The incoming mail server is not mail.onetel.net it is mail.talktalk.net so perhaps you could revise the settings and offer a further set of screenshots remembering to obscure the first part of all email addresses.

Hello!

thanks for your help with this. I’ve updated the settings to the correct ones. I now get the message ‘the identity of ‘mail.onetel.net’ could not be verified. the certificate for this server is invalid.

any ideas?

thanks Jo

The mobile device settings are good. The MacMail settings seem a bit mixed up. I've removed the images as they were showing email addresses. But in summary from what you've shown:

  1. There's a Onetel POP3 email account that has correct incoming server settings but appears not to be associated with an outgoing SMTP server
  2. There's a Onetel IMAP email account in your name that has swapped the incoming and outgoing server settings

So, yes, you're right that what you've got now will not work. So long as you haven't got any mail messages associated with the POP3 account that you need to save first then I think you'd be best to delete both accounts from the Mac and start afresh.

The email settings for an onetel.com email address and Mac Mail are given below for a POP3 email account connecting securely to the mailbox on the TalkTalk Mail platform:

On updating the email software incoming, outgoing and some advanced server settings, you'll possibly be asked to accept a new certificate (yes, accept) and to enter the email password so have the current password ready. Tick to remember or save the password before entering it.

MacMail email app settings for POP3 are:

Account Type  POP3
INCOMING MAIL SERVER (POP3)
Username Full Onetel email address
Password Onetel email password
Incoming mail server host name mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port (POP3) 995
Authentication Password
Incoming Connection Security Use TLS/SSL
OUTGOING MAIL SERVER (SMTP)
Username Full Onetel email address
Password Onetel email password
Outgoing mail server host name smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security Use TLS/SSL
Authentication Password

If you wish to set up an IMAP email account then the only difference is the incoming server port number 993 for IMAP secure.

Thanks so much for your help. Here are the screenshots - I'm not convinced it will work even when permission is given as I had tried various times before, but fingers crossed!

Cheers

Jo

If you saw the message from TalkTalk advising "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings, because of this you will no longer be able to receive or send emails via this email app or software" then the email address receiving that notification has been limited to webmail only access as a last resort action by TalkTalk to stop the use of insecure email.

TalkTalk Mail webmail is secure by design using an up to date Internet browser.

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.

You will be able to get email access restored to email apps or software including mail collection services so long as you're ready to use up to date and secure email settings for all the ways you view emails. We can advise on device and software compatibility and provide customer setup guides. Just let us know each mail collection service, each device, its operating system and email software including version that are in current use.

What is the MacOS operating system software? Only MacOS 10.12 Sierra or newer will support the secure mail required by TalkTalk.

You cannot update a POP3 account to an IMAP4 account. If you wish to keep POP3 but make it POP3 secure, the incoming server port for POP3 secure is 995, the server name is mail.talktalk.net and the encryption is Use TLS/SSL and the authentication by password.

For a definitive check of settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here using the Camera icon (desktop browser) or Picture icon (mobile browser) above this reply area.

When you confirm the secure settings are ready I can request TalkTalk Support to restore full access. TalkTalk Support will respond here and access will be restored usually within a couple of working days.

Prepare for TalkTalk Support - include in the Community Profile (not in these public posts):

Email account holder name

Scroll down to Private notes to add the email address(es)
and TalkTalk or MailPlus customer account number

Check and Save changes
