When I turn off my laptop the internet connection is on but when I turn it on again the connection is lost. This is a recent issue and something I can't resolve except to set up the connection every time I turn on the laptop.

No, no need to check the logs unless the problem reappears.

I could not find the option to allow computer to turn off the device. I could not follow your path to other troubleshooters but found a different path. Network tests were ok and I restarted the network adaptor.

I then flushed the PC's DNS cache. There was an on screen message about checking an Event Log in 15 minutes. I think any errors found will appear there. Do I need to check it and if so, how do I find it.

After flushing, I restarted my laptop and my WiFi is connected.

By jove, I think you have done it!!

Edit:  I turned off and turned back on and I am connected to my WiFi.  Thank you for solving this problem.

Thank you.

Well, yes, it basically means there is no connection. You could try this procedure:-

  • In Device Manager, check that the adapter is not set to Allow computer to turn off this device.

  • Run the network troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Network Adapter troubleshooter.

  • Check for driver updates: Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause issues. Go to Device Manager, find your network adapter, and check for updates.

Additionally, flush the PC’s DNS cache. From the Command Prompt (admin):-

  • Type: ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

  • Type: ipconfig /registerdns and press Enter.

  • Type: ipconfig /release and press Enter.

  • Type: ipconfig /renew and press Enter.

  • Type: netsh winsock reset and press Enter.

  • Restart the computer.

This is the taskbar after I restart and before I connect. When I check the WiFI after clicking that icon, the status us 'not available.

Before you connect to the WiFi, does the Network Connectivity Status Indicator in the Windows taskbar have an X on it like this:-

X means something has changedX means something has changed

Looks like there’s a problem with your internet connection.

We can’t connect to the server at community.talktalk.co.uk.

What can you do about it?
  • Try connecting on a different device.
  • Check your modem or router.
  • Disconnect and reconnect to Wi-Fi.

When I click the internet access icon in the task bar, I can select the WiFi button and connect straight away so it's not too onerous. I'm just puzzled why it doesn't connect automatically as it has done previously..

I never saw 'forget' before tonight. Two networks are listed but forget has not been selected. I don't think my connection was forgotten as it appeared top of the list when I tried to connect a few times a day. I will try and remember 'forget' if I can't see my connection.

Since I last posted, I switched off the Router and my laptop. When I switched them both on again I was connected to the Internet. I had switched off the router twice or more earlier this week but it did not solve the problem. This may be a blip but I hope the problem is resolved.

Thank you for your help on this.  I will post back tomorrow some time and hopefully I will still be connecting automatically.

Hi @Figgis

In Windows 10 & 11 to forget a network, in settings go to:-

Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks

There is a Forget button against your network name.

Thank you for replying.

Perhaps, I don't know.  I was creating a system image a week ago and it took about 8 hours. Towards the end, I tried to turn off sleep settings in the hope if would run faster. Since then I have experienced this problem. I don't remember doing anything with WIFi.

Where can I check if I (tried) forgetting my Talk Talk network on  my laptop. When I search for Wireless Networks its top of the list but it does not connect automatically.

Edit:  The WIFI is ticked to turn on automatically when in range.

Hello there @Figgis, if I may kindly ask, have you tried forgetting your TalkTalk network on your laptop. Once done, re-instate the TalkTalk network.
