Sagemcom FAST 5464 not connecting to ONT

I have been using Fast Fibre 65 for quite some time without issue, but at the start of November 2024 I kept getting connection drop-outs. My PC is wired to the router so this is not a WiFi issue. The Internet would drop out for a minute or so, then return. However, this would kill off Teams  and other meetings / calls, and generally cut off connections to remote locations. Come the start of December 2024 it was getting to be a few times a day. When this occurs, if I go through to the where the router is, I can see it flashing amber, and the Ethernet light on the ONT (black box on the wall) is off. After 30 seconds or so the router connects to the ONT and the service is up and working - the flashing amber light turns solid white.

I have had a nightmare trying to talk / chat with support, and the 'experts' just run off a script and keep asking the same pointless questions I had already answered in the chat. Hint to TT: don't think outsourcing to under-trained, under-skilled services is saving you money.

Anyhow, after one 'expert' decided they could fix it remotely it stopped working entirely. I won't dwell on the Kafkaesque series of events (still ongoing) but I have now discovered something interesting. Note also that I did find a few similar stories on the Internet and even in this community, but no explanation or solution that works for me.

The router (Sagemcom FAST 5464) sits flashing either slow or fast amber. The flash speed reflects whether the green Ethernet light on the ONT is on or off (I forget which way round) - and the router will quite happily sit there for days repeating the slow, then fast flashing without ever connecting. I have had two texts from Talk Talk a few days apart saying "Good news! We have applied a solution...", but of course it wasn't a solution to the problem I am having. They don't explain what they have done, which may be helpful to know for long-running issues.

Several things come to mind

- The old router could be on its way out?

- TalkTalk have implemented some upgrade without telling me, and it broke things

- The fibre connection is broken

Apparently, the fibre connection reported itself working. However, connecting the PC directly to the ONT I could get no connection... at least for the first 6 days of the 'no connection' problem, and I was repeating the router and PC connection testing daily. Then on Monday 16th Dec, even though the router could not connect, the PC could. This is a change in behaviour, and a possible step in the right direction. So the ONT / fibre connection was truly working - so it must be the router? I borrowed a similar router from a friend, and yes, that just connected and produced a WiFi network  etc. etc. Trying my original router again it was just flashing amber lights, so I managed to get TT to send a new FAST 5464 router - I set it up but it did the same as my old router. This is when I looked more closely and realised the friend's router was a Huawei DG8041W (not now in front of me but sure that was the code).

So the questions are

- What changed to stop the FAST 5464 working? (it wasn't me!)

- Why would the Huawei router (much older I believe) work fine?

- Why is there no easy-to-find answer to either of the above?

I am still without a working router (hmm, define 'working'), and therefore no usable data service from TalkTalk. If the Huawei routers work, can TT send one of those instead of the Sagemcom? How do I get that to happen before Christmas?

TIA

DRJ

PS I may only be able to check replies intermittently, when I have access to the Internet

Thanks for that. Yes I've put the profile back now, could you try the router one more time and let me know how you get on

Hi Chris,

I'm afraid that didn't work.

The PC lost connection as you said.

I kept it wired for about 10 minutes but it didn't come back

I rebooted the PC but still no connection.

Swapped to the router, but it did the same thing (flashing amber alternating between fast and slow)

Tried rebooting the ONT, but no change.

Went back to the PC again but no connection.

I checked the troubleshooting on the PC and it said 'No DHCP server was found'

Then just now the PC connected again - so I presume that was you putting the profile back.

The PC connection good. I could try the router one more time, but presumably it is back as before

Thanks for trying that. I don't understand why some things can connect but the dedicated TT router cannot

I've changed your profile back, if the Sagemcom still won't connect please reconnect your PC

Hi DRJCam,

How are you getting on, is the Sagemcom still connected? (if I don't hear from you in 5 minutes I'll change your profile back)

I'll do it now, it can take a few minutes to go through. Could you leave the PC connected for say 30 minutes if it stays connected to the internet, then connect the sagemcom and see if it connects. If the PC disconnects from the internet before 30 minutes then can you connect the Sagemcom at that point. If I don't hear from you before hand I'll change the profile back at around 12:30

Yes, please go ahead and try. Do I keep the PC connected now so I can read this thread, or do you want the router connected immediately?

OK, would you like me to do it now?

Hi Chris,

Yes, let's give it a go. Let me know and I will swap out the PC with the router to see what it does.

Thanks

Hi DRJCam,

How are you getting on, would you like me to try the profile change? (it is simple to do and change back if required)

Interesting proposition. Is this a relatively 'quick' thing to try? And can you reset it back again? Do you have any feeling for what it might do re the connection? The PC is fairly new and running Windows 11.

Much as I want to solve this ASAP, perhaps leaving it until Monday makes more sense, although all mobile data has run out so if the computer connection goes and the router still doesn't work it may be awkward to get in touch.

I will check the Sagemcom router again this evening (I've been doing tests morning and evening in case something has changed!) and can post findings. You don't work evening and weekends by any chance 😁 (just joking)

Thanks for you help on this

It won't damage your PC but it could stop it connecting to the internet if it is currently connected. Do you want to leave this until Monday as I wouldn't want to leave you with no internet connection if it works OK with the PC directly connected to the ONT?

Hi Chris - I think the PC is on & currently connected to it, although I'm not there right now. The Huawei is back with my friend - it is her router that she is using for her TT broadband, so I can only borrow it for a quick test. Obviously it would be good to get one of the Sagemcom routers to work at my house. Presumably this won't affect / damage the PC (it is connected to the ONT by an ethernet cable)?

Fibre 65 does come in 2 varieties, FTTC and FTTP but it isn't really relevant to this. I'll try changing your profile, is it OK if I do it now, it will probably disconnect the Huawei if you currently have it connected?

@Chris-TalkTalk : "Just to confirm, if you now connect the Huawei router to the ONT it works fine?" - that is correct as of 2 days ago. It worked fine although I only connected a couple of mobile phones to it because the local network was different name/password of course, so didn't bother re-connecting various boxes. I could browse happily on my mobile without any mobile data, but connected to the WiFi through the Huawei router.

Does the '65' package come in two varieties? Is there a difference between Full Fibre and Fast Fibre that is relevant to this?

@Gliwmaeden2 : I know they are the older ones - that's what is so frustrating. The older kit is working and the supposedly newer & better kit has stopped working - and it doesn't seem to be specific to my TT connection.

I thought it might be an issue with the profile but the Sagemcom firmware version seems to be compatible with the currently profile. Just to confirm, if you now connect the Huawei router to the ONT it works fine?

@DRJCam, the Huawei routers no longer get updates, so are not a longer term solution, and Talktalk no longer supplies these.

SECOND UPDATE

I also dropped off the brand new FAST 5464 router at my friends house for testing. That too cannot connect to her TalkTalk connection, which is also the fast fibre 65.

Current situation:

Neither FAST 5464 router (new and old) can connect at either my house or my friends house (both FF65)

My friends Huawei router can connect at both houses

My desktop PC can connect at my house

Surely this can be figured out before Christmas, but I suspect I will be here waiting still in January.

I suppose I could buy my own secondhand Huawei DG8041W and use it - I think they were TT branded so maybe TT can send me one? Solve a customer problem in one easy go?
