I currently have Sagecom FAST 5364 routers as main and acces point routers. I also have a telephone system. Both the broadband and telephone system are connected to an OpenReach Mk4 Master socket. My telephone system consists of a Panasonic KX-TG8561F base unit and 4 phones. I also have Talktalk Youview recordable set top TV boxes. for my TVs.
If I switch to fibre how can I ensure that everything will still work? What model of fibre router will I be provided with? My wife and I are 82 years old with health issues will I also be provided with a battery back up system as I believe the fibre broadband and VOIP telephone capability will be lost during power outages which we occasionally get in North East Scotland. I also use DLink power line connector/adapters will they still function correctly?

Hi @bobhossack
Are you responding to my last (or loads of other posts), or Billx?
No, you do not want to connect the router to an extension telephone socket via RJ11, neither accept RJ11. What you need is something like this:-
Whilst I admit this cable mentions RJ11, they are not RJ11 connectors at all but standard BT telephone connectors. Here is another example from somewhere else:-
Neither of these are recommendations, but merely examples of what you would need.
However, I am now totally lost as to what you are trying to achieve. If it is just the base station with four handsets, just connect that base station to the phone port on the back of the Hub 3 (or Hub 2 for that matter).

Hi there @bobhossack. TalkTalk offers Accessibility Services to our more vulnerable customers and these cater to those with permanent health issues or were they may be having a problem or illness for a short time.
These enable those customers with physical or cognitive disabilities
to make the most of the Phone, Broadband and TV services we offer. For example, Free directory enquiries enable's a visually impaired or blind person who cannot read or hold a printed directory to get the same access as an able-bodied person at no additional cost. And there are more. I will be sending you a private message as you have mentioned you and your wife have some health issues, with your permission we can flag an accessibility requirement on the account. Thanks

Thanks Bill and sorry to be such a pest with so many questions but it is imperative that if I opt for fibre that the changeover is as smooth as possible. My wife and I are 82 years old with some health issues and our house is an extended 3-storey one with double concrete walls making wifi coverage difficult. We also rely very heavily on our Panasonic phone set with hansets throughout the house. We would also prefer to keep the panasonic base unit where it is in the kitchen plugged into our wired phone system. The new router would go where our existing router is in the basement so obviously we would need to fit a new telephone socket beside the router when Openreach removce the existing one. From what you say if we can specift a hub 3 then it should just be a straightforward cable connection between the router phonje socket and the new telephone socket. Would the be a cable with RJ11 connectors?

Hi @bobhossack
I did say that about two days ago now, if it is a cordless phone system with however many handsets, just connect the base unit to the phone port of the Hub 3 and it will work. I thought from your posts today that you wanted to connect some wired phones over existing internal wiring to the router. If it is as simple as the base station, just forget everything to do with your current master socket.

Hi @bobhossack
No, no adapter required. The adapter is included within the TalkTalk Hub 3. I think that's the one you have in mind.
Since all you want to do, is use your Panasonic base unit with 4 handsets, and nothing else, then you don't need to install a separate extension socket to use any of your existing telephone wires in the house. Just ignore the Master socket and any wires connected to it.
All you need to do, is plug the Panasonic base unit, not that far from the TalkTalk Hub 3 with a single short cable, and then use your 4 cordless handsets as your telephone system.

When you get Full Fibre you will no longer have a master socket as such, your base unit will connect to the router, directly or via a digital voice adapter depending on model. Assuming all the handsets are wireless, that's it!
on 18-06-2025 03:08 PM
Yes I understand that but I wanted to know if my Panasonic base unit with 4 hansets will work when connected , albeit via a new telephone master socket, to the router or does it require some form of adapter?

Yes, as @KeithFrench is trying to tell you, to do what you have in mind, you need to hunt within the Openreach Master socket, disconnect the origin wires of the existing home phone network, and start a new home phone network via a new plain extension socket next to the Master socket. Then connect the Wi-fi Hub 3 phone socket to the new extension phone socket. Which means it would be more or less the same as having used the Master socket, but now your new system would be completely isolated from the old.

Hi @bobhossack
The exchange cable needs to be disconnected from the Openreach Master socket and you are not allowed to do this. I said that Openreach may come and do that work for you. The master socket has to go as well, as that is their property. Electrically, you need to replace the master socket anyway with an extension one, as the components in a master socket will prevent your internal wiring from working. It needs to be standard telephone cabling & nothing else. Then you would need a male to male telephone extension cable to go from the Hub 3 to your new extension socket.

Hi again Keith.
The phone socket on my Openreach master socket is connected to the distributed telephone wired system throughout my house so surely I should not need to change the Openreach Mk4 master socket.
on 18-06-2025 10:02 AM
Yes I know the phone system will be "dead" if there is no connection into them but I thought that if I connect the telephone outlet port on the router to the socket on my Openreach master socket my wired phone network throught my house will be connected so I can plug my digital phone system into any of my house telephone sockets.
on 18-06-2025 09:44 AM
You would have to replace the master socket (which you are not allowed to, as Openreach owns it). They may provide a free removal service, though, if you consult the Openreach website. Then, if you just connect your internal wiring to a new extension socket, it should work.
on 18-06-2025 09:24 AM
Your phone sockets will be dead after upgrading.
The phone plugs into the router. If your extensions are hard wired they will not work. If the base unit connects to the handsets wirelessly they will continue to work

Thank for all the good help and information,The last thing I need to know is, if I go with a Full Fibre 150 VoIP which comes with the TalkTalk Wi-fi Hub 3 and I connect the phone socket to the phone socket on my Openreach Mk4 master socket which is alongside the router, will my digital 4 hanset telephone system work. It is connected to a telephone socket upstairs. The telephone sockets throughout the house ar connected to the Openreack master socket.

Thanks very much Billx for that useful information.

Hi, @bobhossack
So, it looks like, there are 4 possible new packages
Full Fibre 65 VoIP This would come with the TalkTalk Wi-fi Hub 2
Full Fibre 150 VoIP This would come with the TalkTalk Wi-fi Hub 3
Full Fibre 500 VoIP This would come with the Eero Pro 6
Full Fibre 900 VoIP This would come with the Eero Pro 6
If you choose either of the 2 Eero Pro 6 packages, you will additionally be provided with a Digital Voice Adapter.
So, it remains for you to decide how important high speed is for you, before ordering.
(All phone connections would originate from the location of the TalkTalk Hub or the Digital Voice Adapter.)

The router is defined by the package you order. For instance, there has been a recent change with Full Fibre 150, which used to come with an eero 6, but now the standard router is the WiFi Hub3, which, as I said, comes with four ethernet ports & connects to the ONT via a separate WAN Ethernet port.
