NEW CONTRACT 500 VOIP ROUTER QUESTION

So after spending over an hour on chat i decided to upgrade to the 500 voip service from the 150 service. everything went smoothly to start i agreed the monthly cost which was more than the cost for new customers, but went with it ! I read the advert on your website for the 500 service which says a new eero 6 + accomodating a 1gb speed. i currently am using the eero 6 which im lead to believe is 500 mbps over wifi. when i asked abouth the new eero 6+ the lady said i was only allowed a new hub 3 which is absolutely useless for me as everything in my home is set up for the eeros. So from my 150 contract i had a eero 6 and a spare eero 6 that the good people in support sent me to help me connect with security devices the service has been flawless over the lasst 12 months ?

so my question is ! am i not allowed a few eero 6 + instead of the hub 3

whilst i may be reading this wrong i thought it best to ask you guys whether 1 > a normal eero will work on the 500 voip service and  if not can they be replaced? 2> i would preffer to send the hub back to you guys as it wouldnt serve any purpose. Any info would be great to give me an idea of options? thank you for your time

They don't have to be close together, that would indeed defeat the object of the exercise. But they need to communicate well between the Gateway unit and the wireless extender, with nothing likely to interfere with the signal in between.

my eero that recieves the signal from the ont is about 15 feet give or take ! no thick walls either i always thought that the eeros had omni directional transmission so the units can figure out its best path from one unit to the other ! having 2 units close together seems to defeat the object of a mesh!

Hi,

Seems similar to what I,m experiencing. Trial and error seems the order of the day. With my Hub connected, one room upstairs seems to have little signal..speeds of 50/60 here and then across the landing(directly above where router is) nearer the full 500

I was on today asking about the WiFi booster and strangley they wer retesting my line etc..last I heard from them was 15:55 after sending them a pic of were my router was..

i will give it a few days to settle in as that seems to be the general consesus! when i use the eero app its showing full speed into the main eero downstairs the numbers you see are what im seeing on the pc upstairs. yes numbers from wi fi connectyed to the upstairs eero sorry didnt make that plain

I don't understand those figures? The eero app will only show the speed of the incoming connection. Any device tests need to be conducted individually via a speedtest app connected by ethernet, or WiFi. If you mean that you are you getting the results from the upstairs eero on a speedtest app, then that makes sense.

Bear in mind what @KeithFrench said previously about the settling in time and if things don't improve then try experimenting with different locations. In my case, I find that having the upstairs eero pretty much directly above the main one downstairs works best. But every home environment is different.

So in answer to your questions ! I dont have a fascination with anything electrical let alone eeros. the 6+ ( yes thats the one i meant as thats what i said just to clarify ) was the next version up from the 6 and was an option i was looking at ! whilst i did say i had fallen in love with the eeros at no point had i said i had made any choices as an end user/customer

the 500 voip has gone live today and to say im dissapointed with the 75 mgps increase to the upstairs eero is an understatement. its showing as 512 down and 71 up on the app into the downstairs eero the one thats  conected to the ONT. on the upstairs eero 240 down and 71 up! so no idea why the eero is only working at half speed upstairs less than 12 feet awat through a false studded wall, which i find dissapointing! maybe it needs time to settle back down! i would like to know what the expected speeds are on the sagecom router with the fast 266 extender added into the sagemcom eco system! current state of play with the speed!

Hi @mockingbird43

Having looked up the specifications, the eero 6+ is not as higher spec as the eero Pro 6. If it were my money (and eeros are quite pricey if you buy them), I would think in terms of the eero Pro 6E as I said, as it supports the 2.4, 5 & the newer 6GHz Wi-Fi bands.

Note: when mixing different eero models such as the 6, Pro 6 or Pro 6E, all units will adopt the speeds of the slowest eero, so a Pro 6E would work at the speeds of a 6 if they were in the same mesh.

I spoke yesterday about the eero algorithm for controlling the Wi-Fi parameters, which will impact the speed & how long this takes to reach the best speeds. I did not have the details to hand then, but below are the details.

The eero system is constantly optimising to maximise performance. There are 3 different time scales in which this optimises:-

Short Term – Initially, the mesh takes between fifteen seconds and a minute to calculate the best path for data to travel through the mesh backhaul network between mesh nodes (eeros) when any new request is made.

Medium Term - The mesh takes about an hour to learn what kind of interference you have around your home, and learn to tune reduce it as much as possible.

Long Term – Channel changes take between two days and a week to select the best channels to optimise the mesh. This is very disruptive to connected devices, as they will be disconnected, so it is not done too often.

Hi @mockingbird43

All routers support the 2 4GHz band. Why the fascination with the eero 6+ or do you mean the Eero Pro 6? If I were going to buy my own eeros, I would not consider anything less than the eero 6e to future proof myself. I must admit though I would want to know their full specifications before thinking about it seriously.

I received an email 4 days before My Go Live Day. I just switched the ONT Box off for 40 odd minutes, turned that and router back on and received speeds of 512/72.

Thank you gerry for your input im even considering buying a pair of eero 6 + but that at present is on the back burner untill the increased speed goes live then i can make a discision as to which way im going to go. I do  have 2 devices at home that use 2.4ghz so that has to be an option also

Hi mockingbird43,

I have just up-graded from FF150 to FF500 and my initial set up was having 3 eero,s around the house(downstairs). These worked well when my 500 went Live but as Keith has said the Hub 3 is more up-to-date and can handle more devices.

When I connected the Hub 3 a few devices did not connect (brick wall syndrome) but most devices connected to 5Ghz band. With the help of Keith and today from the technical FF staff, I was able to connect  to all devices.

I will of course monitor for the next few weeks and if problems occur I can go back using the eeros because they are capable of speeds just over 500Mps.

I was using a TP Link extender upstairs but alas that,s not compatible with the Hub 3. I did haggle with the agent about testing one but that's as far as it went 🤣 I,ll still wait for the postman.

Sayyed was the tech agent that fixed mine. Good luck.

i have fallen in love with the eeros as the service has been really good with only an odd drop in speed which was sorted after a 30 minute switch off of the fibre termination box !

You can check in the eero app what your input speeds are.

It is true that the eeros manage the WiFi configuration via an algorithm, it is not an instant thing.

@KeithFrench

Indeed you did: after lengthily proselytising for the Sagecome extender you said "there is nothing to stop you" using the eeros!

I wonder which iteration of the Hub 3 they will get?

Message 37 of 72

that has crossed my mind ! live day is 3rd november, my only concern would be the staff said it can take the system and testing up to a fortnight to get full speed? not sure how much truth there is in such a statement!

Hi @ferguson

I mentioned that as an option quite a few posts ago today.

@mockingbird43

When does the upgrade go live? Before dismantling your current setup you ay want to try with the existing eeros you have. If the performance is up to scratch, then you may decide there is no need for any changes.

Hi @mockingbird43

If you were to buy a 266 from non-TalkTalk sources, as suggested by @slarty*1 there is another problem. If it is a version 1, the firmware may not get updated by TalkTalk on it. This could leave you with a 266 that basically works, but you would have no visibility of it from the Hub 3's web interface.
