I’m visiting my 86 year old dad and trying to fix this problem with his landline. Internet and his CareCall device are working fine. I’ve run through all the rats nest of cables and made sure everything has been unplugged and reseated properly but still getting the “please check line chord” message.

Just reported it.  Apparently there is a fault at the exchange and they’re sending an Openreach engineer to fix it.
Thanks so much for your help. Now I just need to persuade dad that he wanted new handsets for Xmas! 😉

All the best!

Remember to state you first recorded this as not working on Thursday.

At least they will be able to test your father's line for you.

Thanks for confirming.

Staff here are not back until Monday, so it might be worth progressing via chat or phoning so an OpenReach engineer can be booked.

Since his handsets were a few years old I replaced them just to be safe but I’m still not able to get a connection. No error message comes up now but no dial tone either. Calling the line from a mobile just rings out until it goes to voicemail.

Does the existing phone have a detachable cord that goes into the master socket?

If so check for kinks and straighten it. If not it may be a cheaper option to try a new lead.

Or detach it and ask a neighbour if you can plug it into their line to see if it works.

Hi, thanks - unfortunately not here. That was my first thought too but thought I’d ask before running out and getting a new phone for him.

Hi,

This could be a phone issue.

Do you have a spare handset, or one you can borrow, that you can plug in to try the line, especially as you say the care call is working, presumably over the same line?
