So I had a scam call today pretending to be 'Steve' from BT. Googled the number, absolutely nothing. His line was really bad too.
I have NEVER given my landline number out to ANYTHING. I always say I don't have one. So how the *@#][!![]'#[@#]!* have they gotten my name and number? TalkTalk has clearly sold my data after saying on the phone they have not. When obviously they have?
How can I claim compensation on this because I'm pretty *@#][!![]'#[@#]!* off about it.

OK, as there have not been any further posts from the OP for a while I am locking this topic again.

All right, what I meant was that since the phoneline is registered in his name, all he has to do is pull telephone handset out of the socket.
He said he never uses that phone. He said that only nan rings in to talk to mum. That there are no other calls. As if he has prohibited his mum from ringing anyone. That somehow doesn't gel. Also, if you use a phone, you have to accept the possibility of getting one or two scam calls.

@Billx, the OP can't simply "close the landline account".
With traditional copper (whether simply ADSL or FTTC) the landline is the means by which the internet service is supplied.
If the customer wishes to stay with TT, they don't necessarily have full fibre available in the customer's area. Other companies may offer it, but the customer may not want to move to them. It's a big deal switching, especially with all the infrastructure changes.
While the OP's Nan uses the number to call the OP's Mum, that landline service remains essential anyway. Even if the OP could get a switch to Full Fibre, any VOIP would have a number which would be vulnerable in the same sort of way.
Given that many scam calls are the result of bot generated numbers, there's no way to avoid them happening altogether. Sadly we have to be wary of even what look like local numbers calling in. These can be spoofed and easy to make people lift the phone to reply.

So, if you don't use your landline, and you don't call anyone with it, I don't understand, why don't you just close your landline account, and no one will ever scam you again. Just because you never used that phone, doesn't mean that someone who knows your name and telephone number hasn't given this information to someone else other than to TalkTalk. Isn't that right?

I think we've all guessed that.

Never heard of it mate

What's that old saying? "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." Something like that.

Then how did they get my name eh? Nice one read the post next time aye
on 18-05-2023 01:55 PM
It is not obvious at all. Random dialling machines are rife and your number was more than likely simply randomised by a bot. It can happen even if you never disclose your number anywhere.
on 18-05-2023 01:51 PM
No I won't. Maybe you should watch who you sell information to. Bit of a joke that still haven't read the post or you're just straight up deflecting it in hopes someone will believe you.
I do not use my landline.

Hi MasonXD

Thanks

Hi
TalkTalk do not sell data.
You can report any calls received here Who is Calling me from this Number UK | Check Number - TalkT (talktalk.co.uk)

@MasonXD TalkTalk suffered a data breach in October 2015, when a hacker stole more than 150,000 customer names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses and bank details. Were you a customer at that time?

Well asking for evidence from a company that is refusing to give me any documents it's kind of dumb?
Stop ass licking and actually read and take in the information. I don't use my landline it's redundant. No calls are made on it. Yet someone calls me asking for me personally that isn't talktalk.
Sorry let me stress again, the landline has NEVER been used to make a call.
