Dewsbury set to receive internet of the future
In partnership with Kirklees Council, Dewsbury is to benefit from full fibre broadband, to make it the UK’s next ‘gigabit-ready town’, as part of FibreNation’s commitment to bring the network to Yorkshire. The development follows the successful rollout in York, which is nearing completion, and comes amidst plans to expand to additional Yorkshire towns in the Autumn.
Full fibre provider, FibreNation, began construction in July 2019 to connect Dewsbury to the full fibre network, bringing significant benefits to the town’s households and businesses.
The full fibre infrastructure will give internet suppliers access to a gigabit-capable network, allowing them to provide residents and businesses in Dewsbury with access to gigabit speeds capable of downloading a HD film in just seven seconds.
It is anticipated that the first properties in Dewsbury will be able to be connected by early 2020, with work due to be completed by 2022.
Last year, FibreNation completed a successful network build of its gigabit-ready fibre to an additional 40,000 homes and businesses in York, making it the most extensive city-wide fibre infrastructure currently available in the UK. Further expansion across Yorkshire is planned for 2019 with work in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough due in the Autumn, as part of FibreNation’s mission to bring more reliable internet and digital services to three million homes and businesses in the next decade, and further cementing its position in Yorkshire.
Paul Crane, Head of Engagement and Rollout at FibreNation, said: “We are excited to announce we are bringing full fibre to Dewsbury in the next phase of our rollout. There is a huge discrepancy between the UK and the rest of Europe when it comes to full fibre connectivity and we must bridge that gap. Currently, compared to 80% elsewhere in Europe only 8% of UK homes and businesses can connect to a full fibre network, and this simply has to change in order to power up the nation’s economy.
“Fibre is the fourth utility we’ve all been waiting for and we’re proud to be at the forefront of its rollout.”
Cllr Peter McBride, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Kirklees Council is delighted to see full fibre arrive in Dewsbury. The Council has a clear vision for Dewsbury to be a well-connected town and to support initiatives that will drive economic growth, improve employment prospects and improve the cultural experience. This announcement will place Dewsbury in select group of northern towns to benefit from such high-speed services”.
