Slow download speed from some services despite fast connection

Hello,

   I have a solid ADSL connection speed of 55.37 Mbps and I can play youtube videos,  watch HD TV catchup services and Netflix without any problems. However at some times of day near race weekends I can't watch MotoGP and WorldSBK at HD resolution.  Sometimes it is low res which looks like an impressionist oil painting! 

 

When I investigate actual download speeds I get widely varying results depending on the test provider.  Google home says I have a lightning fast connection and reports 50.2 Mbps. Fast.com powered by Netflix always reports a reasonable speed as well, currently 53 Mbps. It varies between about 40 and 55.

 

However when I have a problems with MotoGP Which's speed test can be as  lows as 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps and www.speedtest.net can show similar slow speeds as well, although on good days they show much higher speeds, closer to the actual line rate.

 

I have been in contact with Dorna and after a long email conversation they offered a refund but no fix. They say only a small number of their customers have this problem. I have looked at the bandwidth used by Dorna videos and it is about 6 Mbps, so about 4 times other HD video services but that should not be a problem for a 55M bps connection.  I can watch other HD services at the same time and it doesn't make the Dorna feed any worse. So I do have plenty of bandwidth, just not to Dorna.

 

So what is Which's speed test doing that sees such slow download speeds, that only affect Dorna's videos? It seems like some part of the internet has a slow connection to Talktalk but other parts are always fast.

 

A traceroute shows the Dorna videos come from an Amazon server in Seattle via 19 hops, lots taking around 100ms.

So I thought I would switch to Plusnet Unlimited Fibre Extra which seems to roughly equivalent to Fibre 65 from TalkTalk but when I enter the address and phone number it says it isn't available here. Doesn't make sense as it is fibre to the cabinet from Atherton exchange and Plusnet are listed at the exchange.

 

Anyway while I was looking at that a lady called Carole rang from the complaints team and said nothing can be done. Can she close the complaint? I said no because nothing is solved. After some more conversation where I explained it isn't just specific websites it all the internet that isn't cached and listed the times when the speed drops from the post above she said it would be monitored and she would phone back on Monday. Not sure what is going to be monitored as the line rate doesn't change but I will set up my 5 minute speed tests again.

So most evenings I get a slowdown to about 1 Mbps or less as measured with your own speed test that says I have 41 Mbps guaranteed and your network teams say they won't do anything about it? Even Iplayer and youtube start buffering most evenings now, so this it getting ridiculous. You can't call yourself and ISP because you don't connect me to the internet, you just connect me to a bunch of servers in Aylesbury pretending to be the internet.

 

Due to the fact that the router always stays connected at 56.05mbps to the server named host-2-98-32-1.as13285.net in the Atherton telephone exchange and I can always get reasonable speeds from Google and Netflix my conclusion is the problem is upstream of that. So it seems to be ae51-ner001.irl.as13285.net and it friends in Aylesbury. Is that the home of your internet cache? Is that where the actual connection to the real internet backbone is?

 

The only thing I can't understand is why nobody else is complaining. The ookla speed test picks servers near Manchester, i.e. close to me physically but it all seems to go via several servers in Aylesbury.  I noticed yesterday that your own speedtest uses ookla as well to a server in London owned by Microsoft but it still routes through three different servers in Aylesbury. I am pretty sure Aylesbury is where the problem is. Is that where the network team you speak to are?

 

Looks like I will have to change provider but I go to Tenerife soon, so won't be around to change routers, etc, so it will probably be next spring. Ironic that a tiny Island hundreds of miles off the coast of Africa has a better internet connection than a town about 10 miles from Manchester.

We have been liaising with our CEO Complaints teams who have also been speaking to our network teams,. A decision has been made that nothing further can be done to resolve this issue for you. CEO Teams have therefore said that you will be allowed to leave without penalty or any contract breakage fees etc if you so wish. I cannot guarantee that the issue will not remain with another provider, but notes have been added to your account stating that any termination fees will be waived.

No response from the complaints team since a text on 24th Oct saying " We're very sorry you've had to report a problem, we want to put things right as soon as possible. Your complaint has been logged and we'll be in contact with further updates."

 

In the meantime the problem seems to be getting worse.  Some very slow speedtest results were on Wed 26th at 19:13: Only 0.1 Mbps from Which,  0.79 Mbps from speedtest.net, 1 Mbps from Talktalk, only 3 Mbps from Fast.net but Google still gave 18.2 Mbps. At that low rate even Youtube and Iplayer were buffering occasionally.

 

I can't imagine that this doesn't affect other people but who is going to get in touch because Iplayer buffered a few times in a program? It is only the fact that I have a two Dorna subscriptions where I really notice it not working at busy times.

 

I ran speedtests every 5 minutes for about 11 days and logged 3338 results. I then wrote a Python script to print all the times when it is below the supposed 41 Mbps guarantee for more than one sample and bracketed it with the last good sample and the first good one after, so you can see it is about 53 Mbps most of the time, but not when the internet is busy.

 

Where it shows 0 for the download speed the test failed. I think the command line version times out when it is very slow, whereas the web version of speedtest.net always shows a result. Amazingly all these 3338 tests are saved by ookla and each has a unique URL that displays the results. Here is an example: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/e5226705-1e4c-45c5-aed9-9ac9b2aa3c23. I don't know if they keep these forever but certainly more than 11 days.

 

The speedtest.net servers it uses for the tests are all local to Manchester. From traceroute it seems the first Talktalk host server is near Oldham and then it goes through a bunch of them in Aylesbury, which I suspect is where the problem is.

Hi

 

To set your expectations, if only one customer is reporting an issue, this would never change the allocation of resource or alter infrastructure.

 

We can escalate this to our CEO teams who will contact you to discuss the issue.  They will also contact Networks however if Networks are still of the opinion that nothing further can be done, then CEO Teams will uphold your complaint and possibly offer to waive any termination fee should you wish to leave. I'm telling you this up front so as not to raise your hopes unexpectedly, but set a realistic expectation of what may happen.

He told me they cache most video, but not Dorna. If video needs caching to work it means you don't have enough internet bandwidth at peak times.

So how do they explain how I can have a good connection for the video you cache and one that slows down at peak times for video and web sites you don't cache? Why it slows down for your own download speed test but not Netflix's. How you can show 2 Mbps while Fast.net show 53 Mbps?

 

That proves to me you have a problem upstream of your cache servers. Please put forward an alternative explanation that makes sense and pins it on my router. If I change it I have to configure the new one for port forwarding, etc. A waste of my time.
