In the end managed to pay using a UK VPN which my son had already set up on his tablet while he’s been travelling

I guess you cannot log onto your account whilst abroad. This is a security measure.
The only way, if you don't have a direct debit set up, is to phone to pay. You cannot arrange to pay via the forum.
If it's something else please expand upon your problem so staff can respond.
