For queries about your TalkTalk broadband service.

At ~01:15 this morning my web browser started to hang when opening pages.
After rebooting my router, then my modem and testing various other things (all of which seemed OK) I realized that the problem was that the TalkTalk DNS servers (79.79.79.79 and 79.79.79.78) were not responding.
I changed my router to use Google's DNS resolver and things were back to normal.
Others may not have the option.
What happened?
Will it be fixed?
If so, when?

The TalkTalk DNS service is working again. So I've switched back.

So wouldn't have needed to do any DNS lookups....the Internet connexion was fine.

There does seem to have been a spike in reports around that time on Downdetector, @gmlack:
No problem here, as I know I had the World Service burbling away without issue at the time, using wifi. So it wasn't across the board and you did the right thing using the Google DNS solution.
For further information, you need to phone 03451 720088 [or 03451 720074 if you are a Full Fibre customer] after 9am, or Live Chat, after 8am.
At the top of every community message board and in Community Stars' signatures you'll see the information that there is no Talktalk staff support on the forum any more, so we're very limited in giving answers / solutions other than past experience of fellow customers.
For others wondering where to change the settings that you mentioned, there's some guidance on this page:
