I guess this is what you mean by starting your own thread for this issue? Thanks for any help you can give! Ive attached the most recent Internet speed we're receiving. Please advise.

Hi Keith,
thanks for writing back. I appreciate your offer to help but I’m going to stay with the limited wifi reception we’re stuck with. Others around us don’t have it much better - and some are worse.
until fibre comes our way, I think I we’re stuck. Thanks again though

Hi @Timorteo
My offer of help still exist, but maybe you have been put off by my persistence for this information. It was only to allow me to understand the nature of the problem.
Let me explain. When any device connects via WiFi to a router, they have to go through a capability exchange. This includes the WiFi mode, which can have the biggest affect on speed. You router is limiting that to WiFi 4, whereas your MacBook is capable of a much faster WiFi mode. The second biggest thing to impact speed over wireless is the band it has connected over.
If you do decide you want my help, all information is shared via PMs so only you & I can see it. Anything put in this thread is shared with anyone in the world. However, I can easily understand the fact that you do not know who I am, please see the rest of this post in a minute.
If you want to change your mind let me know.

No worries. Even if you had allowed Keith to help I suspect it would have been fairly marginal judging from your overall connection figures.

Apparently no fibre available in this vicinity at the moment which is very frustrating. I guess I have to be content with what I have then!
thanks

Not sure what you mean there, I removed the offending detail. Ah well, never mind. In all honesty your speeds really aren't that bad for ADSL and far better than I had back in the day. Are there no fibre services available in your locality?

I wouldn't expect, or ask you to share any sensitive personal information. But you had shared the serial number for your MacBook!

Yes I did thanks. I still haven’t got anywhere and I don’t want to trust a lot of information to another person.
thanks .

And @KeithFrench it's a MacBook Pro 13 inch M1 2020 model with a 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking card.

Hi @Timorteo
You have not told me which WiFi band you are connected to, nor the adapter model or MacBook model number. You may have told someone else, but not me. Please PM them to me to preserve your privacy if you want. Currently, you seem to be refusing to answer some very basic questions that I need to know in order to help you. I am not employed by TalkTalk, as per my signature, so I have no remote access to your router. Hence, I am just asking for some preliminary cooperation.

I’ve sent you the model number but I won’t send you the code for it. It’s the wifi router which talk talk provided for me! The computer isn’t plugged into the router, just using wifi signal (and phones as well)

and the answers to my other two questions please @Timorteo

Oops, you’re right it’s that router
on 18-06-2025 04:31 PM
Hi @Timorteo
Please, can you answer all of my questions?
That model is not a TalkTalk router, are you sure that you don't mean the DSL-3782? Which WiFi band is your MacBook connected to and what WiFi adapter is it using or what is the model number of it?

Hi @Timorteo
My offer of help does not mean you have to accept your current download speed at all. I will try & optimise your wireless connection to get the best possible speed, but I will need your cooperation. I'll leave it up to you to decide if you want my help or not.

Have you seen the kind offer of help with your wireless connection which @KeithFrench just posted?
If you want to check the connection details of your Mac to the router then go to the main tool bar at the top of the page and option-click on the wireless indicator, you should get something like this:

Ok thanks, I guess that’s it then, I’m stuck with no changes

Hi @Timorteo
@ferguson has asked me to help you with your wireless speed tests. Reading through a post from TalkTalk's @Mandisa-TT, your speeds are just a bit slow in the download direction. To save me reading all the way through this long thread, please can you just clarify a couple of points:-
Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal or no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment; this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.
Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers a lot more from interference than the much faster 5GHz band, but the 2.4GHz one can sometimes have a better range, but this all depends on your local area.
In other words, I offer a free, impartial analysis of your Wi-Fi network and will try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves sending out a guide to help you get me some important diagnostic results so that I can analyse them for you and recommend changes to your router configuration to solve them.
I only send this out to people who request it.
