No broadband - Router shows White light. G.fast Modem DSL light flashes (should be steady)

I've got a similar problem to many others here. It started at the end of November. At first it was momentary disconnections. Today, I hardly get broadband at all. It's up for 5 minutes, then off for an hour or more.

Reporting it via the chat service hasn't helped. They keep marking the issue as 'resolved' when it isn't. Do I need a new router?

Thanks Simon, yes they are almost certainly related so fixing  the voice issue will hopefully resolve the broadband issue

Thanks Chris

Openreach are already booked to attend on 27 Dec morning to sort out my non-functioning landline (it's gone dead again). So perhaps they can attend to the broadband issue at the same time. (They may be related issues.)

Hi Simon,

The fault is currently in hand with Openreach, if you don't hear anything later today can you bump the thread tomorrow and we'll check for updates

Thanks Michelle. Yes, still the same problem - very intermittent broadband. When not working: steady white light on router, flashing DSL LED on modem.

When it does work, the speed is very low . Just did a test that gave 27 Mbps download and  1 Mbps upload. This is much lower than I was getting last week. The speed may be connected with a line problem, as my TalkTalk landline telephone (on the same pair of wires) went down early hours this morning, but is now working again (but a bit noisy) only an hour after I reported it.

Thanks, Simon

Hi Simon,

I'm sorry to hear this. Can I just confirm, are you still experiencing the same fault since your last post? (white light on router but no connection) Our engineers are still in the process of rolling out the fix for this specific issue.

Thanks

Michelle

Many thanks Keith. I do have a Sagemcom router, and I've done that change. It's now been up for 15 minutes, which is the longest so far today.  I'll report back in an hour and assume it's a permanent fix if it's still up.

*** 40 mins later ***

No, it didn't quite make it to an hour, and dropped out after about 45 minutes (same symptoms). It came back again after about 5 minutes, so it seems to be a lot better than before that change to using Google DNS. But not a permanent fix.

Thanks very much for the suggestion though, Simon.

Do you have a Sagemcom router? If so, try changing the DNS server from TalkTalk (79.79.79.79) to Google DNS (8.8.8.8). Log into the router & go to:-

Dashboard > See internet settings > Manage advanced settings > Internet connectivity > DNS IPv4

Then change the DNS dropdown box to Manually Specify DNS. Then set DNS 1 & DNS 2 as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
