Received "I've been hacked" Email

I've received an email saying that my @talktalk.net account has been hacked and I need to pay $500 into a bitcoin account to ensure that personal videos and images are not released to my email contacts.

Normally I would ignore such emails, but the body of the email contained my password.

I have since changed the password to my webmail account.

I would like to know if any other users have received such blackmailing threats and if they are genuine.

I would also like to know what TalkTalk are doing to prevent such hacking incidents and how a hacker has been able to get into my account.

I have had an account with Talktalk for 15+ years and never had an issue previously.

Can TalkTalk advise if they wish to receive a copy of the blackmail email for their records and where they wish me to send it to.

Thanks

@ScarerTunnelclips, the site mentioned is a safe site which lists known instances where your email address  / password may have been harvested.

Thank you. I have run my McAfee antivirus and malware programmes. As far as I am aware I have not contacted the website that you mentioned.

I think that there are still attempts being made to hack as I have received a couple of odd emails about changing my password: Facebook and a gaming site called Humble.

Thanks.

Hi ScarerTunnelclips, Its absolutely vital that you run a good antivirus and malware checker on every interntet connected device. The email address you're registered on the community with isn't showing normal signs of being hacked, but still run the scans to be sure none of your devices is compromised.

the security team work tirelessly to prevent and block this type of issue. Have you checked on HaveIbeenpwned it usually shows where your details were obtained.
