Hi recort2, just to confirm what Gondola has already told you. Outlook 2010 is no longer supported by Microsoft and it doesn't support our required minimum security settings. This is why you can't get port 993 to work.
Anyone not using the secure settings will find their account limited permanently to webmail only.

OK, I've offered to help you but you've told me not to carry on. We'll assume it is your intention to carry on using Outlook 2010 and the insecure settings. TalkTalk's notifications to cease using insecure mail, that puts your password at risk of being discovered, aren't optional.
You should get used to using TalkTalk Mail via webmail.

Over to you Ady.

hi Gondola,
I certainly didn't mean to criticize you, but my problem is actually solved - regardless if 'correct' or not - by using the posted settings, so no reason to carry on about it.

Your email settings for Outlook are incorrect. TalkTalk Mail does not use Outlook's SPA but does use encryption to TLS 1.2 that Outlook 2010 was not supplied with.
Furthermore, your continued use of Outlook 2010, an inherently insecure and deprecated product will simply get your mailbox locked to webmail access only. Your emails and email password are currently at risk of being intercepted and read. That means your mailbox can be taken over by hackers to send spam.
Please cease using Outlook 2010 right now. The upgrade path is Windows Mail on Windows 10 or 11, a paid upgrade to Outlook 2016 - Outlook 365 or a free upgrade to Thunderbird or BlueMail desktop email app for Windows. Please advise your choice of email software and you will get tailored advice.
The iPhone settings are probably ok. For a definitive check for all the settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of your email address leaving the part after the @ symbol and upload here using the picture icon above this Reply area.

Ok, in case someone needs this, the question has been resolved using the old trial and error
(..and it has got nothing to do with any of the things suggested by the 'expert' ..)
- just to recap, my problem was 'username@onetel.com' was not working on outlook 2010 and iphone -
my solution was:
for both: delete account and make a new one set to 'imap'
set incoming to: imap.talktalk.net
set outgoing to: smtp.talktalk.net
on iphone (x in my case):
- tick the 'ssl' box for the outgoing server (this is the only thing that was not set automatically for some reason...)
on outlook 2010:
- set incoming to port 143, set encryption to auto, (not 993 and tls - that just doesn't work, sorry...)
- set outgoing to 587 (like they say, but) 'do not use incoming server settings', 'tick' ssl and 'tick' spa
(see picture)
voila!

Hi recort2, please confirm you've changed your mail settings to those that Gondola's guidance refers to.

If you saw the message from TalkTalk advising "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings..." then the email address receiving that notification has now been limited to webmail only access OR has a stop on sending mail as a last resort action by TalkTalk to stop the use of email connections not secured by TLS 1.2 encryption.
TalkTalk Mail webmail is secure by design when using an up to date Internet browser.
Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail
Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.
A stop on sending is easily resolved by using currently supported email software and secure email settings as shown in the Email Settings guide below.
If your mailbox is limited to webmail only access for both sending and receiving mail, you will be able to get access restored to email apps or email software, including mail collection services, passwords will then re-authenticate, so long as you're ready to use supported email software and secure email settings for all the ways you view emails.
We can advise on device and software compatibility with TLS 1.2 encryption and provide customer setup guides. Just let us know each mail collection service, each device, its operating system and email software including version that are in current use.
For a definitive check of email settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here using the Camera icon (desktop browser) or Picture icon (mobile browser) above this reply area.
When you confirm the secure settings are ready I can request TalkTalk Support to restore full access. TalkTalk Support will respond here and access will be restored usually within a couple of working days.
