Worth staying with TalkTalk? Router options

As an 02 mobile customer I'm entitled to some very tempting offers from Virgin Media, e.g. their 250Gb service for much less than I'm currently paying TalkTalk for Fibre 65.
TalkTalk has offered me a better deal on Fibre 150 to stay, but I'm unsure whether to as the existing WiFi isn't strong enough on the router I currently have and I've had to invest in 2 Amazon eero6 (at some cost) boxes. I also couldn't put the TT router in to modem mode which is the prerferred mode for eero
Any opinions on the router that comes with TalkTalk Fibre 150? Is the WiFi any better? Can it handle modem mode? What are the router options on Fibre 150?
I believe that the VM router can handle modem mode.

It is designed to connect directly to a full fibre ONT. It can also connect to a DSL line if required. It is a router.

With your eeros, it all depends on whether your Full Fibre installation was done by Openreach or CityFibre. If the former, just connect the gateway eero to the FF ONT. If it is CityFibre, however, they use line profiles. If this is set to Profile T, then either the Hub 3 or the gateway eero will connect directly to the ONT. If that is not set, then only the Hub 3 would work connected to the ONT. If you go for FF150, then confirm the CityFibre line profile with the Full Fibre helpdesk (see the link in my signature).

Is the TalkTalk Hub3 a DSL modem and router combined?

Fibre 150 will work with your eeros, but it depends on who provides the fibre to your property.

Keith, am I right in thinking that with Fibre 150 I can use my existing eero6 as unlike fibre 65 I don’t need the modem functionality that I have with my existing router?

Thanks Keith. The WiFi dropouts used to happen in the study which is in what used to be the coal house/ outside loo so it’s not surprising that the signal struggled through external walls.
its working ok now as I now have a mesh network using the 2 eero 6 boxes I have. One acts as the gateway and is connected to my existing fibre 65 router and the other is situated in the study and connected to the other using power line adapters.

I’ve tried various WiFi extenders with limited success before biting the bullet with the eeros.

Im assuming that my current mesh scenario will function in a similar fashion with Fibre 150.

i was just wondering if there were any specific advantages to upgrading to Fibre 150 that impact the WiFi signal

WiFi range can also sometimes be affected by WiFi interference, which I can help you fix for free. See my details below.

If it does need the Sagemcom FAST266 WiFi booster, this combines with the Hub 3 to form a WiFi6 mesh network. This can be purchased via the TalkTalk Better Value team for about £30.00. To contact the Better Value Team (old Legacy Dept), please call:  0345 1725157.

Opening hours:-
Monday to Friday 09:00 to 19:00
Saturday 09:00 to 18:00
Sunday Closed

Wi-Fi interference (nothing to do with electrical interference) can cause:-

  1. Slow speed,
  2. intermittent dropouts,
  3. breaks in the signal,
  4. no signal at all,
  5. or no internet access.

This can affect one or more devices. This can also lead to a permanent reduction in the speed of one or more devices. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment; this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers far more from Wi-Fi interference than the much faster 5GHz band. However, the 2.4GHz band has a longer range than the 5GHz band and can penetrate walls better. This may very well change depending on your local area.

In other words, I offer a free, impartial analysis of your Wi-Fi network and will try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves my sending out a guide to help you get important diagnostic information for me. I will then analyse these results for you and recommend changes to your router configuration, if required.

I only send this out to people who request it.

Talktalk is generally sending out the Hub3 these days rather than Eeros, and its wifi reach can be helped with extenders, @jgd1955.

@KeithFrench may be able to advise.

There are no Talktalk staff on here any more.

Gliwmaeden2, a fellow customer.

From the 29th of March our TalkTalk Community will move to peer-to-peer support and the TalkTalk team will no longer be here to support with queries. Don’t worry we still have plenty of ways to reach out if you need to speak to TalkTalk directly. For more details check out the link in the post at the top of any forum message board.
