Eero WiFi extender

Hi please can I check some information I was recently given in an online chat. 

I have an eero 6 gateway router and the fibre 150 plan , and it’s great , I have no issues at all . 
I recently added a couple of ring security cameras , one has a good signal despite being the furthest from the router , the one on the side of my house does work , but I noticed it missed some motions and I wasn’t sure if it was the wifi signal at fault . 
Just to check everything was working ok at talktalk end , I contacted tech support. They confirmed my speeds were spot on and everything was working as it should be . The advisor was great, was familiar with the ring app , showed me how to check signal for the device etc (it was rssi 75). It then seemed obvious, as the side camera has a brick wall between it and the router. 
The upshot was the most appropriate solution was to add an eero WiFi extender, so i wasn’t changing my router or service which I am very happy with , but would get a stronger signal where it mattered.
 
Practically, I can’t move the camera or the router . 
 
I was then passed to sales and it then got confusing.. I was offered upgrades and a more expensive monthly plan , where I’d thought those solutions had been ruled out as unnecessary. Eventually they agreed an extender was the answer but said TalkTalk can’t help with that . So after about 2 hours I was back to square one . 
My questions are: 
Is it correct that I can’t get an eero extender from TalkTalk? 
If I get one from another provider, is this the right thing ? It’s a tad expensive so I don’t want to get the wrong thing .

Thank you for such a detailed reply I appreciate it . 
I am a little confused to be honest , the eero router says it has both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands (my phone and tv are connected with 5ghz . 
Tech support at TalkTalk said it was good that the cameras were connected to the 2.4 band as they work best with that band . 
I don’t know anything about this subject which doesn’t help ! It wasn’t that long ago I was given the eero router, wondering why its now obsolete with TalkTalk. 
I’ll give it some thought , thank you very much for your help .

TalkTalk no longer supplies any eero routers on new packages or upgrades; the only router they now supply is the excellent TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub 3 (Sagemcom). I assume that this is also the case with one-off purchases from them, such as a second eero 6.

 

The 2.4GHz band suffers far more from WiFi interference than the newer 5GHz band. This can lead to very poor Wi-Fi coverage. An RSSI of -75dBm is not that great. Only working on the 2.4GHz band is a major problem with any doorbells or CCTV cameras, etc. This is not just down to signal strength issues, but also these can be easily blocked by the bad guys via the use of an illegal jamming device. It is not until at least Wi-Fi 5 on the 5GHz band that you might get protection from this.

 

Wi-Fi interference (nothing to do with electrical interference) can cause:-

  1. Slow speed,
  2. intermittent dropouts,
  3. breaks in the signal,
  4. no signal at all,
  5. or no internet access.

This can affect one or more devices. This can also lead to a permanent reduction in the speed of one or more devices. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment; this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers far more from Wi-Fi interference than the much faster 5GHz band. However, the 2.4GHz band has a longer range than the 5GHz band and can penetrate walls better. This may very well change depending on your local area.

In other words, I offer a free, impartial analysis of your Wi-Fi network and will try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves my sending out a guide to help you get important diagnostic information for me. I will then analyse these results for you and recommend changes to your router configuration, if required.

I only send this out to people who request it.

 

Whilst the eero is supposed to manage Wi-Fi interference, if this is very bad, particularly in the 2.4GHz band, then it cannot do anything about it; no router can. The same goes for any router at that point. Other things that may then need to be investigated are its location within your property and the WiFi bands that you use. It is possible that you may also need to purchase additional eero nodes, as it is supposed to operate as part of a mesh system. Echo Dots, as mentioned by @fr8ys are also an option. Echo Pop, Echo Dot (4th & 5th Gen), Echo Dot with Clock (4th & 5th Gen) and Echo (4th Gen) support the all-important eero Built-in.  I can help with any of this. However, I would suggest that you follow my advice to find out what the root cause of the problem is before throwing money at it.

Hi , thanks- did briefly look into this but to be honest I wasn’t sure , as I read that the eero devices support higher speeds than an echo , and as I work from home and rely on good WiFi , I was a bit hesitant. 
The cameras all use the 2.4ghz band ,I’m not if that’s relevant or not , as I’m a bit of an IT dweeb.

Have you considered an Alexa, which are much cheaper and you then have a smart speaker too.

 

The latest version work as an extender to the Eero. I have 2 Echo Dots attached to mine.

 

There are limitations to using this though which @KeithFrench can advise, as well as answering your original question. However the limitations have not affect me personally.
