Openreach engineer coming to install this Friday AM.---think talk-talk leaving it late to send router as royal mail service in my area bit hit and miss?

It's not unusual. They usually send it out to arrive a couple of days before install.

 

Support staff do not have access to full fibre systems so if you wish to check

No, this is normal. 

 

Sometimes the engineer even brings the router. It normally turns up though just a day or two ahead, @DEGSY2.
