Good morning, my landline has developed a problem, it has a lot of background noise and is difficult to hear someone talking, they also can't hear me very well as voices fade in and out. Could someone please run some checks on my line to see what the problem is. Thank you.

Do you want me to disconnect the filter with the router and phone plugged into it? I won't be able to reply to you until i plug them back in.  If so, for how long?

Please can you remove everything that is connected to your phone socket?

Were you able to complete the check?

I need to find out what type of master, or main, telephone socket you have so I can give the correct troubleshooting advice.

The master socket will be a white box on a wall, and is where the telephone line connects into your house from outside.

Please browse to https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Articles/Your-guide-to-main-phone-sockets/ta-p/2205432 - this page shows you images of the different socket types so you can identify which you have.

Can you confirm what type of master socket you have please?

The phone is connected to the main socket, the noise is still there.

Please disconnect your telephone from the extension socket and connect it directly to the main master socket. This will help us check if the main socket is working properly.

To do this, unplug the cable from the extension socket, locate the main socket (usually built into the wall), and securely connect your telephone to it. Once connected, please check if you can cannot hear noise in the calls and your service working as expected.

Have you managed to do that?

Is your telephone currently connected to the extension socket?

In other words, is it plugged into the socket that's separate from the main wall socket?
