Hi has anyone found an actual way to open a discussion about the jump in cost, I do not even have a land line yet have been given a number and presumably a charge this change has done my head in

The landline number is associated with the FTTC account regardless of whether you use it it not, @Varry (though actual calls would be chargeable....boosts alleviate some of that).
The landline cannot be separated from the broadband service with Fibre to the Cabinet and with the older ADSL service. It's been like this for years now.
The only way not to have mention of a phone number is to upgrade altogether to Full Fibre to the Premises, but it won't save you money.

I finally got a response .....in case anyone else is having this issue. Your contract status and price plan remain the same as with Shell, however the first bill is always higher as it includes the charge from the time you started with us upto the first bill date, in this case 16 days £16.34 + your usual monthly charge is on top of that as we charge in advance, the next bill will be the usual charges £26.49
Sorry this wasn't explained to you.

Hi @Varry
I presume you have transferred over from Shell and received your first bill.
