Can't connect to work VPN

Similar to other recent questions, today I'm unable to connect to my work VPN. I'm getting an error message saying: "The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at least one internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation protocol packets.

My IT department has narrowed the problem to the router or the laptop but as I have successfully connected via a mobile hotspot, the problem must be the router.

It was working fine yesterday afternoon

I will need to make a change to your router firmware, when would be the best time to do this?

 

We advise to leave the router switched on without being rebooted whilst we update the FW. This should take no longer than 15 minutes.
