Internet failure

My internet connection keeps failing. The red light comes on the router. I attempt to reset (switching the router of for different lengths of time) and the red light returns flashing, then alternative flashing red and white, finally returning to a constant red light again. After several hours the internet is restored. This has happened twice in the last 4 days.
