Talktalk router blocking wireguard VPN

I'm doing some remote work for University and they have restricted access via a VPN.

I have started the wireguard tunnel with the configuration used by many, so it should work fine.

However, whilst I should be able to then ping the server, or ssh into the server, all these commands hang and timeout.

If I take down the wireguard setup I can restore pings to the server, so this means my system is correctly routing access to the University systems over the wireguard tunnel but it's getting blocked by something, possibly the Talktalk FAST 5364 router?

Any suggestions for diagnostics or tests would be great!

Many thanks

Ian

OK, it worked fine in Windows 10 - should have checked this first, sorry!

So, I guess this is outside the remit of this support group, I'll try and debug it on Fedora going forward

Many thanks!

I haven't tested from Linux, but Windows works, which proves the router OK.

My PC is running Linux Fedora 42, fully updated

Wireguard details:

# rpm -qi wireguard-tools
Name        : wireguard-tools
Version     : 1.0.20210914
Release     : 9.fc42
Architecture: x86_64
Install Date: Fri 04 Jul 2025 13:53:14 BST

Router details:

Serial No.  N7190774N006658

I will try rebooting in Windows 10 and try from there to see if it's the router or not

Which Wireguard VPN client are you using and what make/model of router do you have? What firmware is it running?

I have tested this with two clients that use the Wireguard VPN protocol without issue. I have just retested this quickly using Proton VPN over a Hub 3 & it worked first time. OK that is not a 5364, but the firmware is similar.

Good morning snowyseal. TalkTalk only provide dynamic IP addresses to our customers for technical reasons. This means you won't be able to connect to VPN that requires a static IP address. However, there are ways of getting around this, like setting up a Dynamic DNS. While we can’t provide specific help in this area, there’s plenty of information in our community on the topic https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=includeForums&q=dynamic

Hi @snowyseal I have accessed your account and reviewed your Home Network settings. I noticed that all settings are turned off except for the Virus Alert feature. Please try temporarily disabling the Virus Alert on your myaccount to see if it resolves the VPN connectivity issue. This will help us determine if it is causing the problem. If the issue persists, we can explore other potential solutions.
