was going to switch provider to shell because of the terrible speed I was getting from TalkTalk

shell promised 17Mbs maybe 36 Mbs but then TalkTalk phoned my mobile

and said I would never get 36 but possibly 17 using my current phone line

also said if I canceled shell I would get

new cheaper 12 months contract 17 Mbs

new better router

well new cheaper price has not started yet although the package shows new

speed is still miserable 9 Mbs like before

and no new router just appalling broadband speed.

fiber is supposed to be coming but no one knows when

I am registered with openreach.

Yes, in that case it does appear to be a fault with the internal wiring or an extension socket. So if you move the master socket and don't reconnect the extension socket then it should be OK

fitted panel back to bt socket and plugged in router to the same socket with microfilter

landline phone disconnected

speed dropped back to 12 Mbs so I guess its wiring or extension socket

the only device plugged in is a router.

Yes, not only has your speed improved but the error count has dropped as well 🙂

If there's a big difference with your router connected to the test socket then it really indicates that there's a problem with your extension wiring/sockets or a device that was connected but isn't now - possibly your telephone. You could try putting the master socket faceplate back on but leave your telephone unplugged just to rule out your telephone causing any issues

tested 24 hours speed good 18 Mbs big difference.

if BT fit the new master socket in a convenient location

will I still get the same speed as when I connected to the test socket?

OK thanks Keith, I've restarted the optimisation process so we'll see if there's any improvement over the next 24 hours

not much space for landline wires hanging out of master socket

the router on the floor right in door way but I have a mobile

which I use for most calls.

Thanks Keith. I'll restart the optimisation process - are you able to connect your telephone to master socket?

ok so no landline for 24 hours then

the router is now moved to the main bt socket and the faceplate is removed.

We would really need to test with your router connected to the test socket. To access the test socket you would need to remove the master socket faceplate and this would disconnect the extension socket

would I need 2 micro filters because was going to router at bt master socket (1 filter)

and leave landline plugged in extension socket (2cnd filter).

don't think bt master socket has a built-in filter.

ok yeah, I can fit at the master socket temporarily would be awkward because it is by a narrow entrance and would be kicked over easily.

The only alternative I can see is to get bt to move the master socket to the living room.

OK thanks. Is there any way that you could connect the router to the test socket and leave it there for 24 hours and we'll see if there's any improvement

Bt socket I have  NTE 5C by the front door entrance to the property but this is not used as it's not a suitable location

in the living room, I have an extension socket with a   landline phone and router plugged in microfilter.

Hi keitht1958,

Thanks for the update. Could you just take a look at the following help article and let me know which type of master socket you have - Your guide to main phone sockets - TalkTalk Help & Support

Thanks

ok seems better now was getting 9 Mbs but since optimization router settings says 13 Mbs

could not get Talk Talk speed check to work ethernet or wi-fi so did a google speed check that said 10 Mbs.

Sunday speed went to 3 Mbs so had to reset the router then it went back to 10 Mbs

Monday speed went to 5 Mbs so had to reset the router twice 1st  time no change, 2cnd reset was back to 10 Mbs.

I usually have to reset the router once a month to keep getting reasonable speed.

with the new contract, I was promised a new router but nothing has arrived yet.

but the speed seems better although not getting 17 Mbs as promised,

OK, I've started the optimisation process. Can you bump the thread on Monday and we'll see how it's getting on

OK, click on See Internet Settings > Manage Advanced Settings > continue> System info > DSL info

Take a screenshot, do not try to attach as a file, use the camera/image icon in the toolbar.
