Despite having all the right settings in Thunderbird, although the last of them (in an account I had managed to forget) was only set on Thursday 15th, at 5pm Fri 16th Feb I started getting the message "Sending of password for use [XXXXXXX]@dsl.pipex.com did not succeed.  Mail server mail.talktalk.net responded: [AUTH] Authentication failed."  Webmail works OK.

How can I regain access, please?

Hi TBL1234, I've added your mailbox to the list of those to be restored to full service.

The incoming server settings on Thunderbird are good for POP3 secure. The outgoing server will use STARTTLS connection security, Normal password authentication on port 587.

On that basis, I shall advocate the restoration of full access. TalkTalk Support will respond here next week and you'll be back in action soon after.

I received "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings, because of this, from 17th February you will no longer be able to receive or send emails via this email app or software. "

See attached screenshot of settings.

I am confident that all devices use secure settings, and I have no rogue devices.

Relevant profile info provided.

Many thanks in anticipation of your advocacy.

Did you receive a notification from TalkTalk  advising "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings, because of this, from 16th February you will no longer be able to receive or send emails via this email app or software"?

Do you now have Thunderbird set for secure mail on that notified account? Tell us the incoming and outgoing SMTP server settings if you wish to have positive confirmation.

Are there any other devices that might have been using insecure settings to connect to the mailbox over the last two weeks? All devices must use secure settings.

I can request access is restored if we're sure there are no rogue devices still using insecure settings or that are incapable of using secure mail encryption to the minimum required TLS 1.2 standard. If there are potential rogue devices then a password change is the way to lock those out.

Prepare for TalkTalk Support - include in the Community Profile (not in these public posts):

Account holder name, TalkTalk home 'phone number (if not Data Only broadband)

Alternative mobile contact number. Full address with postcode (in the Location box)

Scroll down to Private notes to add the email address and customer account number

Check and Save changes
