Migrating my E-mails from Mail for Windows to New Outlook

I recently migrated the receiving of my e-mails from Mail for Windows to the new Microsoft Outlook. I successfully was able to do this for my three talktalk.net email accounts. However, I also have a onetel.com account, but each time I tried to synchronise in the new outlook it failed each time I tried, even when using various settings.

Any ideas ?

Hi Gondola,

Thank you for the settings for onetel.com.

I tried them out and they worked a treat.

So I am now using the New Outlook for Windows for all my e-mail accounts.

Thanks again for your help.

These are the correct settings to use:

Windows Mail

User name                         The full onetel email address

PW                                         The onetel password

Account Name                 Onetel

incoming Server               mail.talktalk.net:993:1

Outgoing SMTP server   smtp.talktalk.net:587:0

Outgoing Server requires authentication  (Tick)

Use the same user name and PW for sending email  (Tick)

Requires SSL for incoming email (Tick)

Requires SSL for outgoing email  (Tick)

Outlook for Windows:

Account Email address /

User name                          The full onetel email address

IMAP PW                              The onetel password

IMAP Incoming Server     mail.talktalk.net Port 993

Secure Connection Type SSL/TLS

SMTP User name               The full onetel email address

SMTP PW                             The onetel password

SMTP Outgoing server     smtp.talktalk.net  Port 587

Secure Connection Type  Start/TLS

My observation is that you're using or have been using insecure mail that is not supported by TalkTalk. Any user that has any device connecting that does not use secure encryption and the secure ports, e.g. 993 for IMAP incoming and 587 for authenticated SMTP outgoing, is going to have that mailbox disconnected from the IMAP server and the mailbox will be limited to webmail only access.

Hi Gondola, Thank you for your message.

I am not any good at screen shots and editing them so what I have done is list below the current settings in Mail for windows and those that are available in New Outlook for windows:-

1) Settings in Mail for Windows.

User name:                        XXXX@onetel.com

PW                                       XXXXXX

Account Name                 Onetel

incoming Server               mail.onetel.com  Port 143:2

Outgoing smtp server     mail.onetel.com Port  25:0

Outgoing Server requires authentication  (This box is ticked)

Use the same user name and PW for sending email  (This box is ticked)

Requires SSL for incoming email (This box is Blank)

Requires SSL for outgoing email  (This box is Blank)

Settings available for New Outlook for Windows:

IMAP PW                              XXXXXX

IMAP Incoming Server     mail.onetel.com Port 143

Secure Connection Type. Options 1)Start/TLS (Recommended. 2)Start/TLS 3) NONE

SMTP username (I assume this my email address)  XXXX@onetel.com

SMTP PW (I assume this is the same as my IMAP PW) XXXXXX

SMTP Outgoing server     mail.onetel.com  Port 25

Secure Connection Type. Options 1)Start/TLS (Recommended. 2)Start/TLS 3) NONE

I think I have covered all the settings that are available. My only observation is the port  settings is that for Mail for windows they are 143:2 and 25:0 whereas in Outlook they are 143 and 25. There being no facility to change to 143:2 and 25:0. Otherwise I think I have tried all the other options.

Each time I try to synchronise  I receive the message  "Something went wrong with this account setup. Try again. You may need an app password".

Any help you can give or advise on would be appreciated.

You're trying various settings?

I believe it would be best to use the correct settings. Take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the onetel.com address and upload here using the camera icon above this reply area. I'll take a look at where you've got to and advise.
