I hope some kind person can give any helpful input on this.
No ethernet connection or wifi on my pc now at all but my wife still has working wifi on her laptop.
Tried all the usual stuff like flushing the DNS,reinstalling the network adapter and resetting the router but to no avail. Windows is saying everything is ok at that end and suggests the problem is with the router.
So,is it possible for an ethernet problem to arise in the router while the wifi still works ?
My problem is that my wife won`t let me use her laptop as it set up for her work which means I can`t now watch daft cat videos all day long .
Any help appreciated.

Do you have a pare router to try?
Or can you take the laptop to a local hotspot to try, or a friends and try with an ethernet and Wi-Fi connection?
It does seem strange that 2 devices fail to connect and one can connect.
Any other devices you have tried?
@KeithFrench any thoughts here?

Looks like my only option is a new pc and hope that solves it. Thanks to you both for your input.

Thank you for confirming that @RossM it seems as the issue is with devices itself and not the broadband as everything else can connect beside the PC and the spare laptop. If I perform diagnostics, it will not pick any issue with the broadband.

Yes. Going out now to buy a wifi dongle for the pc to see if can connect. Two days without Reddit has made me realise I have an addiction 🙂

@RossM so, the only affected devices is the PC and your laptop?
on 24-07-2025 05:56 PM
Just to confirm. No ethernet or wifi on pc and spare laptop. My wife has an NHS laptop for work and it is working on wifi.
Weird !

Thanks for your help so far.

Had already tried another laptop but no luck via the ethernet connection but thank you for your input.

Just one more thought to rule out a faulty adaptor on your PC, could you wife plug her laptop into the ethernet connection to see if this works.
If it does, it points the issue to your PC, if it doesn't work, it point the issue to your router as being faulty.

Thank you for your prompt response. I will begin with some basic troubleshooting. Could you please disconnect the Ethernet cable from your PC? We’ll try using a wireless connection to see if the issue persists. Additionally, before connecting to the Wi-Fi, please clear your browsing history. After that, forget the TalkTalk connection from the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your PC. Restart your PC, and once it has rebooted successfully, reconnect to the internet and give it another try.
Please let me know how it goes.

@RossM thanks for confirming.
I'll leave you in the capable hands of @Mandisa-TT to conduct further tests for you.

Thanks for the quick reply. Have turned the router on and off on numerous occassions and reset it also. Tried 2 different cables and have just reversed them with no luck. I`ve never failed to fix something since Windows 3:1 but this one is beyond me.I`d even buy a new pc if I was convinced it would solve it !

Do you have a spare ethernet cable you can try? If so do this, if not and as daft as it sounds, take the cable out and reverse it. This can sometimes ensure the cable is seated properly.
If that doesnt help, try turning the router off for 30 minutes to start a new session.
And if that fails try a pinhole reset to the router. This will put it back to factory settings, so if you have changed the internet name and password you will need to set these again as they will revert to their original values.
Failing that, you are in the staff's queue for a response.
For a quicker reply can you please ensure you have your personal information up to date in your profile including your TalkTalk landline phone number so your account can be traced. Link here - https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/user/myprofilepage/tab/personal-profile:personal-info
If you are unsure of your phone number, you can find this in My Account or dial 17070 from your landline phone and this will confirm the number for you.
You can also add your account number in the private notes field, which only you and the support staff can view.
Please post back when done.
Thank you
