Fibre 150 slow wifi

Hi there,

I've had Fibre 150 for about 3 weeks now and having issues with the Wifi coverage and speed.

I have a Eero 6 and can see that I am getting 150mbps which is good.  However when I am upstairs not very far from the router my Wifi speed that I am getting is about 5mbps, I've tried restarts, using Echo's as extenders but still get the same speed, its nearly unusable.   I have moved from Sky which I didn't have any issues with.

Is there anything I can do, I have been considering getting a extender but not sure that will help as the Echos do the same, (Max 100mbps)

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

No problem.

Do not worry about interpreting the results, I will do that for you. I will send a PM to you that contains a link for a guide of mine on Wi-Fi interference. It is quite long (about 30 pages), but you will probably only need to look at three or four pages in total. Initially look at the section called "Are you suffering from interference – prove it first". This is the first link in the table of contents. This section includes full details of free Wi-Fi analysers that I recommend for Windows, Windows phone, Android and Apple operating systems. However, I have no way of testing the Apple product. Select the analyser of your choice & my guide explains how to use it.

If you are using Wi-Fi Scanner, then please attach the zip file to this thread. As soon as I have downloaded it, I will remove the attachment from your post, to preserve your privacy.

With all other analysers, please follow my instructions below.

Collect the screenshots that I require and include them in your reply.

Please post the screenshots to me in a PM (to protect your privacy), which I have requested in my guide. No photos please as they can be difficult to read, because the text can get out of focus when zoomed in. Please ensure that the analyser window is maximised (if Windows) before taking the screenshots & upload them via the "Insert Photos" button (in a mobile browser it's the picture icon) on the post editor's toolbar with the Size parameter set to Large.

Hi Keith,

Ok, i'll try moving it out into the hallway.

The Echo dots connect as part of the mesh network.

It would be great if you could send me the guide please.

Best,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the clarification, I had not come across Amazon Echos used in this manner before. First off, even if it makes no difference, the eero must not be located in a cupboard. Once you have relocated it I hope I can help you. When you use the Echos as extenders, do they appear in the eero app as part of the mesh network, or are you connecting them in a different manner?

I think the thing to do is to analyse the WiFi problems & go from there. W

Slow speed, intermittent dropouts, breaks in the signal or no signal on some or all devices or no internet access might be caused by Wi-Fi interference from other local networks, which can also lead to a permanent reduction in speed. No ISP can be responsible for your local environment, this is mainly a byproduct of the popularity of Wi-Fi.

Generally speaking, the 2.4GHz band suffers a lot more from interference than the much faster 5GHz band, but the 2.4GHz one can sometimes have a better range, but this all depends on your local area.

In other words, I try to help you optimise your Wi-Fi connection. The next stage involves sending out a guide to you to help you get me some important diagnostic results so that I can analyse them for you and recommend changes to your router configuration to solve them.

I only send this out to people who request it.

Whilst the eero is supposed to manage Wi-Fi interference, if this is very bad, particularly in the 2.4GHz band, then it cannot do anything about it, no router can. The same goes for any router at that point. Other things that may then need to be investigated such as the WiFi bands that you use.

@KeithFrench Hi,

Thanks for helping.  I did mean Echos,  as these can be used as Wifi Extenders now (https://eero.com/eero-built-in)

Equipment:

Router:  Eero 6 - Model N010011

Extender:  Echo Dot 4th Gen x2 and Echo Dot 5th Gen x1

Set up:

My rounter is located in the centre of me house (132.9m2) - in the cupbard under the stairs (Not ideal), aprrox 1.5 of the ground.  Its wire into the openreach equipement there.  I have a netgear Switched wired into the Eero which has 5 ports connect to other locations in the house for wired devices.

Issues:

The Wifi speed upstair when more than about 2 metres away from the main Eero 6 gives me terrible speed.  It ranges from 40mbps down to 1 mbps, and in general its around 6mbps.

Have tried:

Connecting Echo dots as a mesh but this does not help, if anything its worse as they get the crap speed and then pass it on but slower.  I have tried with out the Echo dots, no real imporvement.  I have also tried locating the Eero router out of the cupbard with No improvement noticed.

 Thanks!

Chris

Hi @Spotrock

@Michelle-TalkTalk has asked me to help you with your slow WiFi. Please can you confirm exactly what router etc you have? You mention echos, but I assume that you mean eeros? How many of these do they have & how is everything connected up?
