TalkTalk just upgraded my friend to full fibre as part of the copper switch-off. They removed a TP-LINK Archer V900 as part of that work and replaced it with - I believe - a Wifi Hub Black.
Unfortunately, the WiFi coverage seems poor (at least without any tweaking) and TalkTalk have said that they'll send out a new router - maybe this will be the same model, or the better version of the Wifi Hub.
Sadly, the WiFi Hub does not have the USB port on it the TP-LINK Archer V900 did. This USB Share feature was actively used with this router (to store a Sonos library).
I doubt the TP-LINK Archer V900 is fibre compatible. So, can I seek some opinion, please, as most threads I've so far seen on this topic seem to be years old?
1) Is there a way the TalkTalk-supplied device can be used as a bridge, turning off its WiFi and having the TP-LINK Archer V900 connect into it via an ethernet cable and its WiFi then be used just as before?
2) Is there a way to do that - but, if not with the WiFi Hub, just with another bought separate fibre modem - entirely replacing the TalkTalk-supplied device but retaining the Archer V900? What might be a good option here?
3) Failing that, maybe it's time to upgrade the TP-LINK Archer V900 with another device that has a USB port and USB Share functionality? Does anyone have experience of, say, the TP-LINK Archer AX55 - https://www.currys.co.uk/products/tplink-archer-ax55-pro-wifi-cable-and-fibre-router-ax-3000-dualban...- which comes in at less than £100? Or other workable options?
4) If the TalkTalk device can end up providing good WiFi coverage then the best solution might be a small NAS, but it has always seemed overkill to now... it's only a 64GB music library that's stored.
I appreciate anyone who offers their thoughts here. We are not networking-savvy.

I visited my fried yesterday. Firstly I used WiFi Analyser to measure the dBm of the signal - the view that shows the needle and beeps at you either slow or fast - just to get an initial impression. In the same room it was clearly a good signal, but even walking into the hallway, never mind a room that had two walls in-between, I could see it tail-off and the beep frequency got much slower.
However, then things all changed... I looked down into the corner where the router was (on the floor) and there was a jumble of wires - some things connected, some not, and I decided to tidy-up and remove unused wires (like, there were two RJ11s down there that were not connected to anything, a filter, some mains cables, a lonely USB cable with nothing at either end etc., so I cleared it all out and I'd disconnected the TalkTalk router at the same time.
Then I sat back and thought about the old TP-LINK. TalkTalk Support had told my friend it would not work with fibre as it was too old, and I'd originally assumed this too. But I connected it to my laptop via Ethernet and powered it on, then I went into Advanced - Operation Mode and changed the setting there from DSL Modem Router to Wireless Router - I altered nothing else at all. I saved, unplugged and just connected it to the ONT via the WAN port (actually LAN4).
It connected up to TalkTalk within moments!
To be honest, I didn't expect that and it changed the whole day.
The Sonos speakers connected up to it again, as they knew nothing else, and they saw the library on USB... and the Philips Hue Bubs started working again after I went and re-linked the skill with Alexa... all of a sudden my friend was almost back to normal. In fact, all that had changed was there was now fibre to the outside world.
So, I said - "OK, that's pretty amazing, shall we unplug it all and put the TalkTalk back in and test it and tweak it?" - and I was rather categorically and emphatically told - "absolutely not, don't you dare touch anything". It was actually quite emotional for my friend as TalkTalk had put the ONT in, plugged in the router and left without any other device being connected - so Alexa, Sonos and Hue didn't work at all, and the TV, others phones and computer needed setting-up for the new network obviously - it was a bad experience. This might be a normal install, of course, but it left anything 'smart' effectively useless as getting them working again was not so simple.
I used WiFi Analyser to do the same thing with the TP-LINK... even at the furthest point of the property the dBm was strong and the beeping fast. I had not got a leg to stand on when trying to persuade my friend to "give the TalkTalk a go". To be fair, I didn't push the issue too hard as it's actually the correct decision, without us doing some tweaking the TP-LINK as-is objectively performs better and TalkTalk would never have given USB sharing back on its own - it just doesn't have that facility.
I wanted to write back as you were so helpful, thank you!, and to explain why I wasn't sending through data yesterday.

Hi @Hippogriff
I can't really give you any guidelines on 3rd party routers, as I do not have any to try. Whenever you get to go there will be fine.

@KeithFrench - thank you for this, I had also been musing on things while I wait until I can attend in person. I had been reading your guide and reading-up on the ONT, as I've never come into contact with one before. I can see it's the Nokia ONT variant with an Ethernet, power and optical port. I can't tell if the Ethernet it's 1G or 2.5G (yellow or orange, but can't see that matters here).
The landline isn't used at all - it's a fully mobile household. But I'd always presumed the existing TP-LINK VR900 would not work with this new fibre setup. I'd thought that something Frankenstein-ish would need to be cobbled-together if it was going to be possible to get access to its USB sharing somehow, with the TP-LINK somehow 'hanging-off' the TalkTalk WiFi Hub.
But I wonder if I'm wrong... I need to try that to rule it in or out factually, I think. Is it actually technically possible to just connect the TP-LINK WAN port (not DSL) to the ONT and have it work for Internet? Could I then follow the instructions here to configure the TP-LINK so there's no username etc., and authentication is DHCP or Dynamic IP?
https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Articles/Set-up-a-non-TalkTalk-router/ta-p/2205383
At the bottom of this page it very clearly says - "Is your router fibre ready? Some other routers are not compatible with fibre broadband. If you're using your own router ensure it's fibre compatible." - but isn't what I'm suggesting (trying to describe) just Ethernet to Ethernet - isn't the ONT the modem? I think I should at least try it out on the day I attend.
As I say, only musing, I'm fully supportive of working to resolve the TalkTalk WiFi Hub issues reported (need to confirm they're real first).
If that is achieved, the question is whether the TP-LINK can connect up to it to provide USB sharing, or whether I persuade someone's bank account (not mine) to shell out for a basic and low-end NAS device.
I know it's a while away - but it is looking like the 10th of November when I can make a visit.

Hi @Hippogriff
A couple of other points to consider. As your friend has the Hub 2 (Sagemcom FAST 5464), this is because she is on full fibre with Digital Voice. The hub is essential therefore for her landline to continue working. Any thoughts of other 3rd party routers, they must have a fully configurable VLANoptions on its WAN interface, or it will not work.

Hi Hippogriff
Thanks for your reply.
@KeithFrench The WIFI optimisation has now been switched off.
Keith will usually post back on the thread or send you another Private Message.

Thank you @Debbie-TalkTalk. I have the guide from @KeithFrench as well, so now the only question is how to go about further testing and reporting back to him. If there's anything that can be tweaked later then we'll now be able to do that. I cannot guarantee when it will be possible to do these tests - not today or this week (I'm sorry) - but maybe the weekend (if I reckon I can 'drive' my technophobe friend remotely) or some time later (when I can do it).
But, be assured, I will not disappear (as the complaint itself has not disappeared).

@Debbie-TalkTalk - I have completed the Profile now, so - when you can - please let me know if you're able to disable optimisation on the router, or whether you need something more / different from me. Thank you.

@KeithFrench - I've downloaded the guide and I am really pleased to see the analyser you want me to use on Android is the one I already have installed and use... WiFi Analyzer by Farproc... for the channel recommendation etc.. and it offers the Snapshot function so that's really good.
My original plan was that we may have to wait for me to visit, run al this and provide the results to you - in a few days - but I also reckon I could remotely 'drive' the account holder to do it sooner. WiFi Analyser is objectively not difficult to use, even for a Luddite. I'll not forget the offer from Debbie to turn off the optimisation when I can fill in the details she requires. Thanks!

I will get on this, and enable PMs by going through the more detailed profile setup and requesting. I'll tag you when I'm done...
on 31-10-2023 11:30 AM
Please can you request that TalkTalk enable PMs on your profile.
Then once done, I will PM you a link for a guide of mine on Wi-Fi interference & initially look at the section called "Are you suffering from interference – prove it first". This section includes full details of Wi-Fi analysers that I recommend for Windows, Windows phone, Android and Apple operating systems. However, I have no way of testing the Apple product. Do not worry about interpreting the results, I will do that for you.
Please post the screenshots that I have requested in my guide (no photos please they can be difficult to read as text can get out of focus when zoomed in), from the analyser you are using (also in my attached guide). Please ensure that the analyser window is maximised (if Windows) before taking the screenshots & upload them via the "Insert Photos" button (in a mobile browser it's the picture icon) on the post editor's toolbar with the Size parameter set to Large. If they are too small, I will not be able to read them & although I can enlarge them, this puts the text out of focus. If you prefer PM them to me. If you do PM me, then please add a link in there to this thread, so that I can find it easily.

Hi @Hippogriff
I'll ask TalkTalk to disable WiFi optimisation on the router for her now. Please make sure that her details are at least in the Private Notes page in your community profile. They'll need the minimum of (assuming ordinary fibre or broadband & not full fibre), so that they can find her account:-
Name
Address
Landline phone number and/or account number
Mobile
I'll send you another post about the next stage, so this one is not too long.

@KeithFrench, thanks - to your question...
Have you had TalkTalk’s Wi-Fi optimisation disabled on this Sagemcom FAST53464 router?
Not at all... it is "out of the box" - even the default SSID, WiFi password, admin. console username and password are all just as it came.
I doubt TalkTalk will do this upon my request... as it's my friend's home we're considering... so I suppose we have now gotten down to account-specific stuff (which I clearly didn't expect at the outset, but is understandable)... may I ask - can my friend phone up their Support and verbally ask them to do this, or does she need to register and log-in here?
Whatever we need to do - we'll get on it (it might not be immediate - but that does not mean we have lost interest, we'll be back).
I plan to make a visit in early November (a few days, I just need to sort out my Leave). At that time I had hoped to just analyse the channels nearby and make changes if it's obvious, then potentially look at temporarily disabling 5GHz altogether as the complaint appears to be distance / obstruction related. That kind of stuff is around my personal limit.
I have relayed to her that this is respected as a good router - the sceptical face I got in return would make you laugh, I'm sure - let's just say there's someone ready to be convinced.
If I can provide anything more diagnostic-wise in the meantime, please just ask.
