Blink Camera won't connect to 2.4 ghz on Wifi Hub 3

Had full fibre 500 installed yesterday and my router is the WiFi Hub3. I'm having problems connecting my Blink Camera to the WiFi. Blink camera has to connect to 2.4 ghz but the camera only keeps connecting to 5 ghz. Evidently Blink requires 802.11 b/g/n and my new wifi 6 router is 802.11ax. From what I've read on the Blink website, my new router is backwards compatible and should still work on my new router. Can someone kindly explain to me how I get the Blink camera to connect to 2.4 ghz instead of it connecting to 5 ghz. I know how to log into the router, but haven't a clue what to do once I'm logged in.

If the camera only supports the 2.4GHz band, it is technically impossible for it to try to connect to the 5GHz band. This is because it will not be able to even detect the 5GHz band at all.

This problem is normally caused by poorly written IoT apps. Whether that is the case with your app, I have no idea. I have never seen a case where the router is at fault. What you need to do is to separate the routers' two WiFi bands to use different network names. This only has to be done while you are connecting these IoT devices. Once done, the router can go back to the same WiFi name for both bands.

These instructions cover the Wi-Fi Hub 3 (Sagemcom FAST 5359); other Wi-Fi hubs are very similar. What you need to do on the Hub3, once you have logged into it, is go into Advanced Settings and click the cog icon in the Wi-Fi 5GHz section. In there, against the 5GHz band, append, for example, these two characters to the end of the SSID name:-

5g

to the network name shown in the 5GHz Band's SSID field. If this was previously (as an example) set to MySSID for both bands, set the 5GHz one to MySSID5g. Click Apply & log out of the router.

Now connect your device that is hosting the app to the Hub's 2.4GHz band (in this example, that would be the MySSID one). Now run through the procedure to add these IoT devices. Once they are fully operational, rename the Hub's 5GHz band back to MySSID for this example.

I want the camera to connect to the 2.4 ghz not the 5 ghz. When I try to connect the Blink, it shows that it's trying to connect to 5ghz and obviously it can't connect because it only works on 2.4 ghz. Seems like the 5ghz is the dominant option, and the router doesn't let the Blink choose to connect to the 2.4ghz. Not sure if I'm explaining it very well at all.

In the settings for the Blink camera in the Blink app, I choose WiFi connection, then find my router name in the list that comes up, type in the wifi password for my router, which then ought to allow the Blink camera to the WiFi, but each time that I try to do that the router seems to only be allowing the Blink to connect to 5ghz and not the 2.4 ghz...............not sure if this explains it any better?

Hi @AnnieUpNorth

Before doing anything, I assume it connects via an app, then?

I don't really know how to do that. I'm rather green when it comes to routers. I had thought of disabling the 5ghz, then the Blink camera would connect to the 2.4 ghz. However, I didn't know if I'd then have problems reactivating the 5 ghz again. I didn't want to cause problems for the router, so after I'd logged into the router, I looked and came back out without changing anything.

No problem @kanya-TT, when the customer comes back & answers my questions, I'll take it from there.

Hi @AnnieUpNorth

Yes, the router is backwards-compatible, but if the camera only supports the 2.4GHz band, then it can't connect to the 5GHz one. How are you determining this?

Moving on, let me try & help you. How is the camera supposed to connect to WiFi, is it:-

  • a manual selection of network name (SSID) & password,
  • WPS
  • Via an app

Hey there, @AnnieUpNorth. Have you tried adjusting your frequency when logged in to the router?
