Device IP settings

I have added a device (a transceiver radio) to my network.

It appears correctly on the Device List but without an IP Address. So I have added an IP Reservation using an IP in the range of the other devices, 192.168.5.15, but there is no connection and Ping does no connect.

Is there something about IP Reservation....?

Yes, please send me your guide on Wireshark.

I will be away from home next couple of weeks and wont have access to my PC or radio. Perhaps by the time I get back I will have come to my senses and abandoned this project!  Even so all this has piqued my interest in Networking.

Unless you have specialist hardware, you can only capture IP packets to & from the device Wireshark is installed on, or subnet broadcasts.  I can provide full details on how to get me a trace, which I can analyse for you. If you want me to help you like this, let me know & I will send you my guide on Wireshark.

L:inux firewall not blocking the device.

I've installed Wireshark and it's happily capturing. I see my PC, mobile and weather station, but not security camera, VoIP adaptor, nor TV (even when streaming). I've never used Wireshark before. I've tried capture and display filters but the preset ones don't seem to do anything.

If you are using the Linux firewall, are you blocking any ports in the outbound direction?

Do you have Wireshark installed on this PC, if so can you please get me a trace of the connection attempt? I can provide full guidance on doing this if needs be.

The remote control software program installed on my Linux PC.

The server for the program is built into the device.

The device has its own wifi adaptor, into which you enter your wifi router and device IP addresses (with the option of using DHCP).

Where is the remote control being accessed from, your Linux PC locally on the same subnet or from the internet?

When I said the device was working I meant it was working manually.

What is not working is the remote control software - I can't get it to connect to the device.

It is likely the control software is the problem, but the software people haven't been much help.

I removed the reserved address I put in, and now I notice DHCP has allocated an IP address 192.168.5.25

Near time to give up on this project!

With a mask of 255.255.252.0 the IP address will be as follows:-

  • Network address: 192.168.4.0
  • Router: 192.168.4.1
  • First host address: 192.168.4.2
  • Last host address: 192.168.7.254
  • Broadcast address: 192.168.7.255

Now, the DHCP address range within the eero app may well limit the address range to a smaller group of addresses.

If the device is working OK, then there is no problem really.

Correction:

1. The IP address for the device is 192.168.5.198

2. The subnet mask for my wlan is 255.255.252.0

3. The Gateway (Eero) address is 192.168.4.1

4. DNS is 192.168.4.1

The subnet mask for my wlan shows that all my devices have addresses outside the permitted range. That is what I was told by the control software poeople. However I read elsewhere that the permitted range for IP 192.168.4.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0 is 192.168.4.1 to 192.168.7.254

1. The IP address for the device is 192.168.5.198

2. The subnet mask is 192.168.4.1/24

3. The Gateway (Eero) address is 192.168.4.1

4. DNS is 192.168.4.1

The Device doesn't seem to have a default address. I had to enter it (in the Eero app) as a Reserved IP

There are a lot of Linux cli info that I have found, but you have to go through quite a few to find everything out. Try:-

iwconfig or nmcli

What's Windows?

I will see if I can find a Linux command line that does the same thing.

The device works OK. It's just that I want to control it from the PC.

Hi @spaarks11

Have you actually checked the IP address allocation on the device itself? It is not just the IP address that needs to be allocated. It will need four things:-

  1. IP address
  2. Subnet mask - should be 255.255.255.0
  3. Default Gateway - should be 192.168.1.1
  4. DNS server - should be 192.168.1.1

Hi @spaarks11

The device may have ICMP (PING uses this) disabled, a number of devices and a lot of routers do these days, it improves security. You could try a Windows utility called TCPing, that should work.

Does this device actually work?

Pinging the IP address gives unreachable.  I have tried using several IP addresses around similar IPs. All my other devices Ping ok.

I'm in contact with the device software group to no avail.

Yes, normally, but all seems OK in the app. What is the actual problem?
