Eero 6 & ethernet ports/ethernet switch

Hi all,

Can't seem to get a consistent answer from telephone/chat support, so trusting you peeps on the forum to help 🙂

Due to come back to Talk Talk soon on full fibre 150.  Already have the ONT (had fibre with Sky).

I have the Hue and Hive hubs.  Hubby does prefer to connect Xbox via ethernet, but not essential.  But I need minimum of 2 spare ports for the Hue/Hive.  I understand the Eero 6 only has 2 ports.

Have 2 questions:

1) Is it ok to add an ethernet switch to the eero 6?  Support saying it would slow the connection down considerably if I did.

2) Or can I use another router?  Support saying I have to use the eero 6 as I have to use the eero app to connect.

Thanks all 🙂

@jackieb123

Why bother even talking to customer services directly when you know you have got us? Shame.  😢

@IndianSummer @Gondola

Thanks to you both 👌🙂

Really appreciate your input.

Unfortunately, I’ve decided to stay with Sky now after another rather trying conversation with support.

But wanted to come back and post a big thanks to y’all for your help.

J

I agree with @IndianSummer and confirm that my Full Fibre 150 installation is using a TP-Link gigabit 5 port network switch to the gateway eero 6 port. There's no measurable speed loss downstream or upstream. Whichever Support agent told you otherwise clearly has no practical experience of gigabit network switches.

I can answer one of your questions.

I've had a Netgear unmanaged switch connected to my eero6 since March 2022 & it has behaved faultlessly.

ie one port on the eero6 is connected to the ONT and the other to the network switch, which drives all my ethernet connections including my grand stream voip adapter.

I pay for FF150 and I've just done a Speedtest on my iMac with wifi turned off & only an ethernet connection.

result was 150.51 down & 31.17 up.

I wouldn't worry about an unmanaged switch slowing things down.

Good Luck
