Eero 6 and eero secure

Only just found out that eero secure isn’t working on my iPhone (ignoring content filters and blocked sites etc), but works fine on my iPad. I have tried to look it up on the internet but I’m afraid it doesn’t mean too much to me, appears to be something to do with MAC addresses. Is there anybody that can explain it to me, and if possible, and more importantly, tell me what to do to sort it out. Many thanks

Just try it again in a moment; this seems to be a bug with the forum software.

Obviously more naive than I thought, I’ve tried to send a private message but not sure whether it sent or not, coming up with odd things like ‘add a caption’ which I did and then ended by saying ‘you have reached the limit for number of private messages that you can send now. Please try again later’. Please let me know if it has arrived and if not where am I going wrong?

many thanks livewire10

Many thanks keith for your quick response. I’m going to be tied up for the next day or so  so won’t get chance to answer your request until the weekend in time for you lo look at it early next week, if you have the time. I’m sure you could do with a break from me for a while. Take care.

In the eero app, this is all profile based @Livewire10. Is the iPhone in a profile (possibly the same one as the iPad)?

Please can you PM me (to preserve your privacy) some screenshots of what you have set up with the profile(s) and what they control, so that I can see where the problem is? When you use the Insert Photos facility in the PM editor toolbar, please make sure that the size parameter for each screenshot is set to Large?

Thanks for your response Keith but eero secure still doesn’t work. Listed below is the actions I performed.

IPhone

Private wifi address off

wifi address on iphone identical to MAC address on eero (other than one is upper case the other lower)

eero secure doesn't work

Funny thing is with iPad both scenarios work.

iPad

Private wifi address on

wifi address on iPad identical to MAC address on eero (other than one is upper case the other lower)

eero secure works

iPad

Private WiFi off

wifi address on iPad identical to MAC address on eero (other than one is upper case the other lower)

eero secure works

Yes, whatever the current MAC address of your iPhone needs to match that set up in eero Secure.

Sorry Keith, I have now found where the ‘randomised MAC address’ can be found. I have turned off  ‘private wi-fi address’ but it doesn’t have seemed to made any difference, do I have to do anything else?

Thanks Keith for your response, I’m afraid I am a naive iPhone user, but where is ‘randomised  AC address’ please?

Hi @Livewire10

Is your iPhone set up to use "randomised MAC addresses"? This is an alleged security enhancement, but IMHO it provides no extra security at all & renders any filtering based on a MAC address unreliable at best & hampers diagnostics.

This will need to be disabled on the iPhone itself, which will leave you with a static MAC address. This may or may not be the same as the one when you configured eero Secure. Any rules affected will need to have the MAC address within them changed to reflect the stable MAC address.

Good morning Angelique, yes I have cleared the browser cache. I have set up eero secure to block explicit content, blocking apps etc but it just doesn’t take any notice of these on my iPhone but does on my ipad. There is no difference in setup on my ipad to my iPhone, so can’t see why the behave differently. As I said in my original post there appears to be something to do with MAC address and if there is an iOS update or you do a factory reset the MAC address changes and upsets eero secure. I know no more I’m afraid. Thank you.

Hi @Livewire10

@angelique-TT has asked me to help you. Exactly what are you trying to set up in eero Secure:-

  • Content Filtering
  • Block Apps
  • Block & Allow site
  • Ads Blocking
  • Advanced Security

When I understand what you are trying to do, I should be able to help you.
