New Hub2 fibre not as good wifi as Hub1 copper

Just had fibre 150 installed yesterday I now am using the wifi hub 2 vs SGK100206.

It seems that the wifi signal is not as strong as the old hub (copper )

The day before the fibre install i did a key room and also garden test where i mostly use the internet and am now comparing the results.

At first thought that the signal/ speed was slower but I think the signal seems to be coming and going which may account for my seeing poor results on the new compared to the old, depending on the exact moment I start the sped test.

I have a wifi app that is showing me that the router is using channel 11 but this channel seems to be varying star wise from full stars - all the way down to 0 star and yet other channels are consistently stable at full stars. See screen shot from phone.

It was never about getting more than 80 in that room- it was about the new Hub 2 - used for FTTP having a weaker wifi than the hub1 so going from FTTC to FTTP I am actually getting slower speeds than before in that room. But its OK now I am using the booster - for which I am grateful to receive - just a shame the HUB2 needs it.

Old FTTC wifi in the room under test was 25-30MBS starting off as 56Mbs at the hub1

New FTTP wifi in that room is 10-20Mbs starts off at 156 at Hub2

Router Hub1 and the new Hub2 are in the same place

The 266 Boosted wifi in the test room is 80mbs

Other areas in the house where the old FTTC wifi was good are receiving the FTTP uplift benefit.

The further away from the router that the 266 (or any mesh node of any manufacturer) is, the worse the WiFi signal is measured from the router as it arrives at the 266. The worse it is, increases the loss between the two or might even cause the connection between the two to break altogether. Then nothing will work.

Although I have never tested this, you should be able to run an Ethernet cable (Cat 6 minimum) between the two, rather than relying on a wireless backhaul. However, if moving the 266 closer to a router is not practical (I do understand this), I can't see that Ethernet backhaul would be practical either.

TalkTalk cannot guarantee WiFi reception in any property, as levels of WiFi interference or objects that block or reflect WiFi signals in your house are beyond their control. If you ever want more than 80Mbps in the affected area, you could consider buying a second 266 as per an earlier post of mine, but that is up to you.

I am using a phone with 2.4 and 5Ghz capability and using the talktalk speed test. I currently have the 266 booster in the affected room. I understand your point bout moving the booster closer to the router - sort of half way between the two - I get why that would be the better place but that would not be practical for me. For the minute I am happy with 80Mbs in a room that used to be 25-30 with the old hub.

I suppose there is a max that the 266 can boost to, currently as per my phone speed test without it on the room is getting 10-20 and with it on its 80 so I suppose that if I moved it closer to the Hub it would be receiving more and so the boost will be more. - But then it will be further away from the room so will be loosing more. I think the optimum position for it for speed is actually the worst place for practicability - not only for power but because I can not tuck it out of the way somewhere discrete.

Sorry @Marvel that my advice is coming in dribs and drabs, but it is while I am thinking it through.

I think what would be best to do, is to temporarily turn the 266 off. I don't remember what sort of device that you were getting me screenshots or snapshots from before. Unless you were using a desktop PC (I am sure you do not want to be moving that around the house), move the laptop, smartphone or tablet (provided it supports both the 2.4 & 5GHz WiFi bands) near the hub 2. Then get me the info you did before from the WiFi analyser that you used. Then go to a midpoint & get me another set of screenshots or snapshots and I'll see how they compare. If you want to do a speed test from the midpoint as well, that is fine, but it is not really necessary.

With just your one 266 the ideal place for it is halfway between the router and the poor signal area, have you tried it that far back to the Hub 2? Have you tried a phone at that halfway point & simply doing a speed test with it connected to the router's WiFi (perhaps even turning the 266 off for this test)?

One other possibility if the property is big, is to buy a second 266 via the loyalty dept and put that in between the two. This will in itself cause some loss between your existing 266 & Hub2. There is also no guarantee that it will connect with tree mode topology, where the router connects to the new 266 and the original 266 connects to that 266 & not directly back to the router.

I know the feeling, you could try an extension lead on a temporary basis. At least there is a reasonable amount of low-voltage cable between the 266 & its power adapter.

Yes that's right but I am also needing to compromise with the need for a power point within reach and also a convenient shelf etc.

Hi @Marvel

I don't give up that easily!

The problem is the further that you move the 266 to the affected area and away from the router, the more speed will be dropped over the Wi-Fi backhaul link between them. You may get a better speed if you try moving the 266 a bit closer to the Hub2. It will be a case of try it & test it each time.

Just an update. The booster seems to be doing the trick -in an affected room without it the speed test shows between 10-20Mbs and with the booster its 80mbs - so it works well. But that is from being 156 at the HUB2. With the old HUB1 the speeds were about 30Mbs from 56 at the router.

But I am happy with the outcome so thank you Debbi and Michelle and Keith. 👍

Yes, I would agree with you, which is why I am suggesting a 266 WiFi Booster.
