City Fibre did a successful installation this afternoon. My second phone is still connected to the Openreach box and works. Will that at some point be removed?

Only building work or redecorating the property.
Does your city fibre include VOIP (digital voice)? If so then the phone will plug into the router and once copper is turned off you extension, if wired in from the master socket will cease to work as there is no direct link from the router.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I can't see I've any incentive to get removed given it allows me a secondary phone upstairs which I don't have with City Fibre. Can you suggest any reason for me to be proactive about having it removed?

It will probably just cease to work. There is no automatic removal of dead lines.
if it's underground, it won't require removal, but you will be able to remove the line up to the master socket as up to the socket it remains open reach property (unofficially I doubt they would complain if you were to remove a dead line within your property, but thats my own personal view not that of TalkTalk).
if it's overhead and you wish it removed, for example decorating your property, you can request OpenReach do so by completing the form here.
