Internet connection repeatedly drops to iphone /ipad via wifi - firmware update?

Hi,

From web searches I can see this is a common problem. My phone and iPad remain connected to wifi but frequently (several times per day) lose connection to the internet. I know this only because web pages time out. If I disconnect and reconnect wifi the connection is restored to the web. Other devices not affected to my knowledge.

I think it might be worth trying a firmware update, which I believe Talk talk can initiate remotely? I have a fairly old router, had it for 5+ years.

thanks!

Ok thanks for confirming and please let us know how you get on once they are updated.

Thanks for reply. Yes there are both on 18.1.1.

As there is a newer version 18.2.1 I have asked them to both update.

Morning,

Thanks for confirming. Does the ipad have the same version of IOS as the iphone?

Router’s been running since Tuesday now. It’s definitely improved. Twice unfortunately I have been forced to reconnect WiFi, despite waiting a minute or two p, hoping it would provide network. I think these were both on my iPad, and therefore no probs on the iPhone yet. On one of the errorsI could see the router light was white and, more importantly, the iPhone was able to connect to the internet without issue.

Got the router and set it up. I will test for some time and get back back to you. 🙏🏻

I've ordered the router, it should be with you within a couple of days (there's no charge)

Hi Chris, yes please that would be good, assuming there is no charge. Thank you.

We can send a router to test with, would you like us to arrange this?

Hi Chris, that's good to know the firmware is up to date, thank you. Unfortunately I don't own another router with which to test the connection. Open to other suggestions.

Hi eg_parad1gm,

Glad to hear that your internet connection still seems to be OK. Your router has the latest firmware version, have you tested with a second router to rule out any issues with the current one?

I got an email from Open Reach on 20/12 saying an engineer needed to visit me and to book something. I didn't because it wasn't a convenient time. I got another email saying the issue was resolved 23/12. My phone line and internet are both working, including dial tone.

I therefore assume everything's working as it should and there's no need for further engineer input. Please could you resume helping me with the issue this thread is about, to which my suggested action was for you to update my router firmware?

Thank you.

Yes it's a possibility although it does usually take longer

My internet just went down, so I guess they’re working on my line, unless it’s a coincidence?

Hi eg_parad1gm,

Line test is picking up a potential issue so I've raised this to Openreach for investigation. They will investigate over the next few days and may contact you directly if they need to access your home

Er… so I think there is no dial tone. I can’t remember how you get dial tone on my Gigaset wireless phone. But it’s saying “please check phone connection” and doesn’t do anything when asking it to dial.
