You could maybe try connecting the long cable to the new router, will that work?

just had another look at the phone socket and it does have a plastic clip but it is pushed right in to the socket but I can get it out but the cable is still not long enough  to reach from the router to the phone socket.

received new router but cable to short to reach phone socket,present cable is just wired into phone socket and back of router I think this was done by B.T.
