I spoke to TalkTalk earlier in the week when I received an email telling me to upgrade security by following the link. I was told it was from TalkTalk... My question is: Why did it com from email address *removed* ?
Before I follow the link I want to be absolutely certain the email is from you and since when did you star using hotmail emaill addresses to send out instructions to customers?

People that set out to do us wrong usually have a self-centred personality disorder mindset of never being wrong; a psychiatric illness.
I cannot treat the illness but the symptoms I'm here to help resolve. Just keep your own security defences up because having received one phishing email you're likely to get more. Report and delete. Report and delete.

The world would be so much a better place if people who set out to do us wrong would use their energies to do good things. That's just a general comment about the things that have gone before.
Many thanks for your support Gondola.

Fortunately you are more security aware and it's just as well because there are genuine emails from TalkTalk going to TalkTalk Mail users that are using out of date security settings but there's also the classic phishing emails in circulation as well.
A timely reminder of this fact that could trip up less aware people.

Thank you Gondola. My concern is that I spoke to TalkTalk customer services and they said it was genuine, I will admit that I hadn't noticed the sender's address when I spoke to them but even so.

Obviously a phishing email. There are similar examples in the Help with Phishing emails guide (below). Please follow the guide to Report a phishing email. You can also report to the UK Suspicious Email Reporting Service.
There are genuine emails from TalkTalk about updating your email software settings but none involve following any link to sign in to verify your account.
