Hi, I have the same problem.

It seams every year there is an issue with @Lineone which takes hours if not days to correct.

Bearing in mind I have not changed my settings etc.

I have given up webchat etc just the same old questions.

But I have not changed anything its your end but they will not have it.

Hours wasted.

The reason that you're asked to accept the certificate / continue using the talktalk.net server is because the target principal name of lineone.net is a domain that is not listed on the security certificate for mail.talktalk.net.  Outlook 2016 should be saving the security certificate automatically but if not then View Certificate and Install Certificate.

The only thing is I keep getting a note come up...

Target principal name is incorrect .. View certificate... Do you want to continue using this server.

I click yes and it works but just wondering if there is a reason for the note.

Many thanks

That's certainly an Outlook 2016 version that is supposedly supported (although Microsoft themselves have deprecated even earlier versions of Outlook 2016 software) it does not appear to have been updated with the later Outlook 2016 software that supports the StartTLS command. i.e. it's actually based on the former Outlook 2013 software. Why it never got updated is as much a mystery as to why Microsoft launched it with that software.

On the Advanced tab

  • Incoming Mail section
    Set Port to 993
    Set Encryption Method to SSL
  • Outgoing Mail section
    Set Port to 587
Set Encryption Method to TLS or Auto

On the outgoing server tab

  • Tick my outgoing SMTP server requires authentication
  • Log on using
    Username (full email address)
    Password
  • Done

Also check that the computer's Internet options do have TLS 1.2 ticked.

Select start button / windows icon
Type Internet Options, Select Internet Options
Select Internet Properties - Advanced Tab
Scroll down
Untick Use SSL 3.0
Untick Use TLS 1.0
Untick Use TLS 1.1
Tick Use TLS 1.2
Tick Use TLS 1.3

Microsoft Outlook 2016 (16.0.5257.1000) MSO 00339-10000-0000AA784

It was working up to a few days ago. My other 4 emails work perfect talktalk, tiscali

None have StartTLS option

Many thanks for your help

No it is not.

Where do you see that it's purporting to be Outlook 2016?  If it were Outlook 2016 then it would have as an outgoing server connection security option the StartTLS option in the drop-down menu.

I think it's Outlook 2010 or 2013. From the Outlook toolbar select Help > About

In that case you do not have Outlook 2016 but an earlier version. TalkTalk supports Outlook 2016 or later but not the earlier versions.

Let me know your chosen upgrade path. Windows Mail, Outlook 2016 - 365, Thunderbird, BlueMail etc.

Your Outlook 2016 is capable of secure mail sending.

  • Incoming Mail section
    Set Port to 993
    Set Encryption Method to SSL/TLS
  • Select the Outgoing Mail section
    Set Port to 587
    Set Encryption Method to STARTTLS
  • Tick my outgoing SMTP server requires authentication
  • Done

Hi. Correction.... I can send from my web mail.

Just not from my computer. I have 4 messages in my out box.

I am using outlook 2016 windows 10

Thanks for your help

Ok, so the reason for not sending via Outlook is that you're still using insecure ports and not using TLS 1.2 encryption security.

Which version of Outlook are you using on Windows 10? Outlook 2016 or newer up to Outlook 365 are the supported email software versions.

You'll be able to send mail from webmail but if you're saying that you see nothing in the Sent objects folder then that suggests you're sending from software set up as a POP3 mail account that does not sync to the online mailbox OR an IMAP account that saves sent mail locally and hasn't got the Sent objects folder synchronised.
