Unable to send and receive emails for pop3 TalkTalk email account

Hi. Like quite a few others my emails stopped working after you finally made the changes on Thursday.  However, I had been changing the settings on my three TalkTalk email accounts before that, but every time I did so they stopped working, with error messages, so I changed them back again.  After D-Day the same thing happened, but after trial and error and a mix of old and new settings, I have my Worldonline and Tiscali accounts working again.  The only one that isn't is my pop3 TalkTalk account. (I am using latest MS Office 365 Outlook client).  I have read that others say you are blocking accounts which don't have the new settings?  I have input the new settings, but it says the password isn't recognised.  WebMail works okay with the same password.

How do I go about getting my TalkTalk pop3 account unblocked so it works again, or advice to correct?  Thanks.

Hi The_Plainsman, the mail address in your community profile has full access. There must be another issue.

Thanks again.  I have added my TalkTalk email address in private notes and my account number.  When I changed my TalkTalk email password, I did change it in Office Outlook email setup and ticked the box Remember Password.  I have also tried deleting the password in email setup and pasting it in again.  So, you may be right perhaps the account is blocked to webmail only.

I'll wait to see if I hear back from TalkTalk.

Either Outlook 365 hasn't saved the new password or on 23rd your email account was limited to webmail access only.

Please put the email address in your Community profile, Private notes. I'll request that full access is restored for the email address mailbox in your Community profile Private notes.

TalkTalk Support will respond here and access returned within a couple of days after that. Until then use TalkTalk Mail webmail via an up to date Internet browser to keep in touch with email contacts.

Thank you Gondola and sorry to bother you again.  Now that I have changed to mail.talktalk.net on Worldonline and Tiscali, they appear to be working as test emails in setup are coming through okay.  The only issue is that my actual TalkTalk Office 365 Outlook email is not recognising my password now (see attached).  I did change this successfully four days ago as I was setting up a new PC and couldn't find the original email password and I could initially receive emails in office Outlook.  This new password works fine logging into TalkTalk webmail and MY Account.

Any idea why it isn't being recognised now with Office Outlook 365, and does something need fixing at TalkTalk's end?

Thanks again for your help.

The ports and encrypted connections are good.

The incoming mail server host name is mail.talktalk.net

for both POP3 and IMAP4 account types and all domains including tiscali.co.uk and worldonline.co.uk

The outgoing (SMTP) server host name is smtp.talktalk.net

Hi Gondola, thanks for your prompt reply. May I just repeat that I did try changing the settings on my 3 email accounts a couple of times well before the deadline of Thursday gone, and every time my 3 email accounts stopped working, until I changed them back to the original settings again.  TalkTalk's emails on this never indicated that customers may run into any difficulties, in fact they suggested that if we changed the settings as supplied, everything would be hunky-dory.  However, this was certainly not my experience.   I have also been setting up pop3 email accounts myself since before 1998, overcoming any issues, and I have IT qualifications and experience in Tech support.

Anyway, I have now changed all three of my email accounts over to the settings which you and TalkTalk have been providing (please see attached screenshots).  The only remaining query is that my Worldonline and Tiscali accounts both had pop.tiscali.co.uk in the incoming mail server field.  Should this remain as this or be changed now to mail.tiscali.co.uk or mail.talktalk.net ?  I need both to work, as well as my TalkTalk pop3 email.   The internet email settings are the same for all three accounts as per your instructions and the attached screenshot.

Once I correct the mail.tiscali.co.uk or mail.talktalk.net query above I'll let you know and you can then arrange to release these three blocked accounts, so please reply now and then advise when they are released thereafter.  Thank you.

A mix of old and new settings is not good and means mailboxes would all get limited to webmail only.  Mailbox client access is being switched off in batches.

If you saw the message from TalkTalk advising "Our records show that you are still accessing your email using unencrypted email settings, because of this you will no longer be able to receive or send emails via this email app or software" then the email address receiving that notification has been limited to webmail only access as a last resort action by TalkTalk to stop the use of insecure email.

TalkTalk Mail webmail is secure by design using an up to date Internet browser.

Select here: Sign in to TalkTalk Mail

Enter your full TalkTalk Mail email address and password, select Sign in.

You will be able to get email access restored to email apps or software including mail collection services so long as you're ready to use up to date and secure email settings for all the ways you view emails. We can advise on device and software compatibility and provide customer setup guides. Just let us know each mail collection service, each device, its operating system and email software including version that are in current use.

Outlook 365 supports secure mail and to update go via the Advanced setup settings of an email profile, as in this example for Windows 10 or 11.

  • Select the  Windows icon bottom left
  • Select the  Settings cog icon
  • Select Accounts
  • Select  Email & Accounts and for a first time setup select Add Account and enter the settings in the table
  • Or select the email account
  • Select Change account or double click on the email account

At that point on your device you ought to see the Outlook setup to enter the TalkTalk Mail server settings: NB All talktalk domains use the exact same IMAP/POP3 secure settings.

Supported Outlook 365 settings for POP3 are:

Account Type  POP3 secure
Username Full TalkTalk email address
Password TalkTalk email password
Incoming mail server mail.talktalk.net
Incoming Port (POP3) 995
Incoming Connection Security SSL/TLS
Outgoing mail server smtp.talktalk.net
Outgoing Port 587
Outgoing Connection Security STARTTLS
My Outgoing Server Requires Authentication Yes
Authentication Method Normal Password (Not SPA)

However, Outlook 365 will not authenticate a connection until TalkTalk restore full access.

For a definitive check of settings take screenshots of the incoming and outgoing server settings, image edit to obscure the first part of the email address and upload here using the Camera icon (desktop browser) or Picture icon (mobile browser) above this reply area.

When you confirm the secure settings are ready I can request TalkTalk Support to restore full access. TalkTalk Support will respond here and access will be restored usually within a couple of working days.
