Starting with webmail only accessed via your home broadband and not via any active VPN service. You can sign in to your mailbox because you say you can see a number and presumably that number is on the Inbox line in the folder view? That number represents unread messages.
If you're not seeing those unread messages at the top of the selected Inbox List view then check the More message options triple dots icon top right of the List view and check that the Sort by is Date and Sort order is Descending. That's to ensure the latest Inbox messages are at the top of the list.
If there's any possibility that mail might be diverted from your Inbox check there are no Rules defined and if there are Rules then after deleting all you should scan your email devices to remove any possible virus, trojan or other malware and then upgrade the password as a security precaution.
