Help required setting up Eero with Fibre 65

Hi, I purchased some Eero routers/nodes to try and improve the signal/coverage around my property, I have fibre 65 (not full fibre) with the Sagemcom router.

I require some assistance with the best way to go about setting it up, they usually advise putting your ISP router into modem only mode but I understand that option is not available to me.

I did find some threads about this and changing ip addresses and DHCP settings etc but I’m not that sure/confident about what to do and which settings to change.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

You are disabling the WiFi on the Sagemcom, so its SSID name is irrelevant. Set the SSID & password on the eero to whatever you want, it is easiest to set it to whatever you used in the past. That way you will not have to tell each device the new WiFi credentials, they just carry on using the ones they have always used.

I am not sure what you are trying to save on your iPad, if it is the settings in the router's UI, then this may be an iPad issue as I have never seen this with a Windows PC, laptop or Android.

Ok I think it’s all done, only thing I had to change the IPv4 Pool start to 10.0.0.10 as .11 kept saying forbidden IP address, everything else is as you advised.

I eventually found a workaround to save the settings on the iPad, if you hold down and ‘open new window’ every time you click then you can save it, a bit of a pain but it seems to have worked.

One last thing should you give a different SSID and password to the Eero than your normal TalkTalk network?

Thank you again for your help and patience with this matter.

No, the subnet mask was just for completeness. Which router is it, the 5364 or 5464 & what firmware is it running?

Might be tricky as it just kicks me out back to the login page whenever I try to change it, one thing I didn’t mention is you said change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 but it’s already that by default, do I just leave it?

Hi Keith, thank you for your assistance.

It allowed me to change the DNS server to 10.0.0.1 but whenever I try to save the IP to the same it won’t save because the pool start and end have an invalid IP address, if I change them all at the same time and click apply it says 10.0.0.11 (IPv4 pool start) is a forbidden IP address, 10.0.0.10 (and 12) seemed to work but when I clicked yes on the “are you sure” warning pop up it just logs out back to the login page.

This is on a PC, on the iPad it just logs you out whenever you click on the TalkTalk WiFi hub settings logo (cogs) so you cannot change anything.

I have disconnected the eero.

Thanks

Hi @Divsec

That is only because of a possible IP addressing conflict between the two of them & to be fair, eero does not expect you to connect it to anything less than full-fibre, or at least I have never tested an eero directly connected to FTTC. You could also go down the route of changing the IP address on the eero after it is up, but that may not be possible as it could be unstable at that point.

One other thing @JSeba I should have pointed out is that you will now have a Double Nat network. This is only ever a problem if you need to do any port forwarding to route any incoming connections from the internet through to one of your devices. It is not too difficult & I can always tell you how to do this.

Wow, how do Eero ever sell anything, that's a lot of resetting.

Thanks for taking this on @KeithFrench

Then I think you will still need the Sagemcom. Not knowing what you have currently configured within the 5364, do a factory reset & for the moment leave the eero disconnected. One problem is that the eeros use something called "Supernetting" whereas most routers only work with "Subnetting". I won't bore you with the details about this, but suffice it to say it is best to put the Sagemcom on a totally different IP network to the eeros, to save any potential clashes. I would recommend an IP address of say 10.0.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

To configure this, whilst very possible over the Sagemcom's WiFi, if you have a wired (Ethernet) device such as a PC or laptop, it will make your life easier. In the Sagemcom, this is a three-stage process & it is best done in this order:-

  1. Remove any DHCP Reserved IP addresses (already done by factory resetting the router).

  2. Change the DNS address handed out by DHCP

  3. Change the router’s IP address & DHCP IPv4 Pool Start & End ranges to match.

Next, change the DNS address handed out by DHCP

Dashboard > See Wi-Fi Settings > Manage Advanced Settings > TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub > DNS

Change the DNS address to the new IP address of the router (10.0.0.1) & click Apply.

Now go back to the LAN IPv4 tab & change the router’s IP address & Subnet mask to the new ones (10.0.0.1 and 255.255.255.0) & DHCP IPv4 Pool Start & End ranges to match. These could be set to something like 10.0.0.11 to 10.0.0.254, it could be a much greater range, but it would only apply to devices connected to the router's four Ethernet ports.

Once all this is done, confirm the address change has taken place OK by disconnecting & reconnecting the PC & with it log into the router on its new address of 10.0.0.1. Once in there, disable all WiFi bands.

Now connect the first (gateway) eero via an Ethernet cable to one of the Ethernet ports on the rear of the Sagemcom. Turn it on & set it up with the eero app.

Hi Keith, I think it’s just the standard fibre version.

Hi @JSeba

Your fibre 65, is it the full fibre version, if it is you won't need your Sagemcom. However, if is FTTC the Sagemcom will need to be on a different subject. When you answer my question I will tell you what needs to be done.

Hi, thank you for your reply, yes I have it setup as instructed, I thought that without the modem only mode you needed to change some settings with ip addresses and DHCP to avoid conflicts.

Do I just need to turn off the TalkTalk WiFi and leave everything as default?

Hi @JSeba have you checked out the Eero app for installation instructions?

In your sagem router you could disable the WiFi settings and let WiFi be handled by Eero. You would connect Eero to router by ethernet cable.
