Sagemcom-FAST5364 - No internet on Guest Wi-Fi, incomming VPN blocked, cannot add port forwarding.

As per subject,

I'm experiencing issues with the TalkTalk router. Not sure when they started, but they are definitely not working.

Router details:

  • Model: FAST5364 3.00
  • FW: SG4K100174
  • GUI version 5.100.1

[Guest Wi-Fi]

When enabling and configuring the Guest Wi-Fi, either on 2.4 or 5GHz, you can connect but do not get a DHCP address assigned. This was working a few months ago and I only enable/disable is when we have, well, Guests.

After Enabling and saving settings, sometime the GUI also fails to respond, for example when you click on Advanced or MAC Filter.

I believe I'm not alone in experiencing this issue!

[Port forwarding]

When trying to manually add a new port forwarding rule, the interface always indicates "invalid IP address". The IP address is correct, and the device is on the network. This was possible before and working, why has it stopped.

For anyone reading this post and got the same issue: Find your connected device in the list under ethernet or Wi-Fi connected devices, click on it and then add a new rule this way. This rule will be accepted!

I believe I'm not alone in experiencing this issue!

[VPN connections blocked]

Recently needed to turn on the VPN server again, so to be able to access home network while out of the house. The connection is not working, like protocols are blocked. (This was after the above port forwarding issues was resolved). Tried with both OpenVPN and WireGuard, but both seem to not operate. Making an outbound VPN connection does work, just no inbound VPN traffic.

I believe I'm not alone in experiencing this issue!

[GUI]

If you make a change, but navigate away form the page and select Yes to accept that you loose your changes. Then the dashboard of the GUI gets really upset. It thinks there is no Wi-Fi configured (does not even show the 5Ghz settings, there are no connected devices, settings do not load when you click on Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

what is going on with these FW updates.

Does anyone have a FW update or downgrade that resolves these above issues. They did not exist before, so why now?

You cannot change the routing table for the guest network. What IP address are you using for the router?

Hello Keith,

If you mean, enter the right password to be accepted to connect to the Wi-Fi, then yes of course, if not I would see messages indicating authentication would fail or password incorrect. To add: There are no MAC filters configured on the guest network, and channel and bandwidth selection are on auto. Once connected, the MAC address of the device shows up under the guest network as a connected device. But it never gets the correct IP from the DHCP server.

For all I can see, there is some routing issue when using the guest network, but I'm not even able to edit the routing table if I wanted to. When applying the settings, the page always returns an "oeps there was an error".

I assume that you have actually established a successful WiFi connection to the Guest network? Only after connection will an IP address be allocated.

It worked fine when I tested it prior to release. Please can you try a factory reset (not turn off & back on), if that does not solve it, perhaps you're router is faulty? Even prior to V202 the correct IP address & subnet mask were allocated but the wrong default gateway address was used.

Hello Keith,

You asked: When you connect to the guest network, what IP address, subnet mask & default gateway addresses are you being allocated?

As I indicated earlier to Karl, I get the standard windows APIPA 169.254 version, in my case 169.254.193.173

And no internet access, nor DNS server or gateway address. (just tried again for the umptiest time, just to be sure)

Could it be a routing issue? preventing the client on the guest-wi-fi in finding the DHCP server?

You asked:   What mobile device are you having issues with?

As per description, it is when I  user either Safari or Mozilla Firefox browser on my Apply iPhone.

You asked:    In what sort of scenario are you trying to use Multicast DNS, there is no configuration for it in the router?

Sorry my bad, I should have written DDNS. The DDNS update client on the router does not give much feedback or status updates or simply when last coms was success or not and at what time.

Are we sure the Guest Wi-Fi issue is solved fully in the firmware version SG4K100206?

Thank you

Hello Keith,

After the update by Karl the software is now: SG4K100206 and the GUI interface is 5.100.5

i've already done a soft reboot and when that did not work, pulled the plug and restarted.

Guest network is not doing it.

But since the update I also keep running into the problem now that the web-interface from the router only works properly on a computer, but not on a mobile device.

If I use it in either Safari or Mozilla Firefox browser on my iPhone, and want to see the advanced setting, for example to check the mDNS settings or add/remove a port forwarding , then each time when I click "Manage Advanced Settings" and then click on the icon "TalkTalk Wi-Fi hub" or "Access Control". Then the browser reloads and I'm back at the router login screen. If I enter the login details I have to start over again.

In Mozila firefox there is also the option to request the computer page rather than a mobile page but it makes no difference.

From memory this was not an issue before as I was able to manage the router via my phone.

One other question, unrelated to above, the mDNS section. It does not show a timestamp of when the last check/update was and if this was successful, any change on improvement here. I almost like to have a daily update even if my IP address does not change.  At least then you can see it was updated, it is that little feedback that I'm missing. But just a thought.

thank you

Andor

Hi @Amlosjes

@Michelle-TalkTalk has asked me to help you. The bug that stops Guest networks from working was fixed in firmware V202 & 206. What version are you running currently.

Hello Karl,

Sorry it has been some time before I could test and reply.

Port forwarding I can now configure, VPN is now working.

However, the  [Guest Wi-Fi] issue remains.

Trying to connect to the enabled guest-network will only give the standard windows APIPA 169.254 version.

And no internet access.

I do find it strange that the guest Wi-Fi would work on the same sub-net as the main wi-fi. The use of guest wif-fi would be to [a] control easily access by means of turning on/off or changing the password, and [b] to separate the visitors from the 'normal' network.

On some (older) post I did see people who noticed the guest wi-fi was using 192.168.8.0 range.

I think there is no static route enabled/configured to link the guest wi-fi interface with the rest.

One thing to mention is that the talktalk router is not the DHCP server, there is a separate DHCP server on my network and it is disabled in the router. i should still be able to bridge the interfaces and guest wi-fi should connect.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hi

I do not have access to the changelog for the new firmware, but the VPN should work.

There is not a separate IP Range for the guest network, there would only be a separate wifi SSID.

Hello Karl,

I checked and I was able to manually add a port forwarding rule.

Not able to check the VPN part but will do so in a few days.

As for the guest Wi-Fi, this is still not working.

What IP range is being assignedfor any guest network or is there a way to configure this manually with vlan settings so to keep the networks separate but still use the same DNS settings.

Can you share the change log of the fw version please.

Thank you.

Hi

I've updated the firmware of the router. Can you reboot all devices and retest.

Thanks

Karl.

Hello Michelle,

I did update these details, just wonder why I had to as I had linked my talktalk account with the community account when asked.
