Thanks Gliwmaeden2,

Interesting, and I've already bought my own emergency power supply as we're not on full fibre (fibre to cabinet, copper to home only) and have not been offered any battery backup from TT. 

 

It does raise the question of whether the shut down of PSTN for TT users will coincide with all copper to home cabling being replaced by fibre to the home. I'll ask that question on a new post.

Thanks Ferguson, I appreciate you taking time to reply.

 

I know that UPS/powerbank devices can temporarily power routers etc during power cuts, so provided TT either supply one or can advise which are compatible with their home devices (I have asked the latter but got no reply so far), that deals with the power cuts. 

 

But that wouldn't be much use if it was the provider's comms device in the home that was faulty (I think I'm on my 3rd TT WiFi hub for instance) so I'd like to know how TT would deal with that situation.

 

I don't know why it should be so hard to get this sort of guidance directly from TT, since every one of their UK customers will presumably be moved off PSTN within the next year.

They can provide a battery backup.as I mentioned earlier.

Thanks for the reply.....I'd be pretty surprised (but very pleased) if we get Full Fibre courtesy of Openreach any time soon,  due to our rural location.

 

So TT are encouraging me to renew my contract (for 2 years), but can't tell me what that service will look like after 1 year (January 2027) or whether they'll be providing an emergency call provision to allow us to phone out during power cuts or other connection problems.  Most of the government advice seems to be 'ask your comms provider' which with TT is feeling like a lost case.  So looks like I might need to find a different provider who can provide what I need.

There are battery backup options in the event of power cuts for vulnerable customers when digital voice finally reaches you. For any other questions, please start your own topic.

You can't, @MickL, it's not issued until they are sure that they can offer you Full Fibre - they are not the only ones working with Openreach  / Cityfibre  / Other companies setting up connections for all the different ISPs. Talktalk is also at the mercy of availability due to Openreach's schedules etc.

 

Some other ISPs may have a monopoly on the service when it's first available in an area, so neighbours might be switched over if they are with BT, but that doesn't mean it will be available with Talktalk any time soon.

 

As above, you will never be switched off without a sensible notice period and the general cut off time is expected to be January 2027. Even then there will be some exceptions. 

 

All contracts are best done in person on 03451 720088 or using Chat  - then you can fine tune exactly what you want and get some clarification about backing up the phone service etc. 

 

You will be in the same situation re backing up the phone regardless of supplier as the VOIP is always going to be vulnerable in a power cut.

So....I called the suggested number 0345 172 0088, the AI agent response was totally useless, and when I eventually got through to a person, she could not help. She did however give me an alternative number 0345 172 0093. I rang that, to then be informed that its not a customer facing number and that I should call.........0345 172 0088 !!

 

Its little surprise that the Customer Service ratings for TT are so poor ! 

 

Does anyone on this community know how I can get hold of the info I'm after I.e. estimated timescale for the switch off in my area, and how are TT going to ensure emergency connectivity during power outages (which we get quite often) where mobiles are not an option ?

I need to know 2 things please about TalkTalk's analogue phone switch off, as I'm being pushed to re- contract (for 2 year term) and I need to know that TT will give me the phone capability I need, in order to decide whether to stay with  TT or not.

1. Estimated timescale for the switch off in my area  (BH25 postcode)

2. We get no usable mobile signal at home so how will TT be ensuring that I can continue to make emergency and other urgent (medical) phone calls etc during power cuts ?

Hi @brokenboiler There’s no fixed date for every TalkTalk customer yet. Migration is happening gradually and regionally. Expect to receive at least 4 weeks’ notice before your switchover.
