Problems with Sagemcom-FAST5364-3.T8 version SG4K100174 connecting

  The main problem is that the router has been dropping the connection more and more frequently and then taking up to 3 hrs to reconnect - fast orange blinking, slow orange blinking, white/orange blinking - then repeat & repeat - no steady white for up to 3 hrs.  No improvement after power-cycling and restarting gateway.

 >  I replaced router with an old Plusnet router - no problem - immediate, fast and steady connection - I would stick with that except that it was last updated in 2019 - so, potentially vulnerable.

 >  I have performed factory reset (both with pinhole on back and through online management screen) - problem recurred after reset.

 >  Logging into Router (192.168.1.1) now raises flags about a 'Self-signed' security certificate - I don't remember seeing this before - all browsers force me to ignore warning.

 >  I think it was after the last firmware update (months ago) that a worrying problem arose - the Dashboard Connection status reports "Your router is not currently connected to the internet" - depite it clearly being Online and the router (apparently) working correctly.  The connection diagram shows red line between 'router' and 'world'

>  The log is now showing some DNS errors - "netmon-control.dropbox.com" and Amazon & Avast urls as in attached screengrab.  Not seen before reset.

My worry is that my router is either failing or has been hacked.

Any help would be appreciated,

Hi Michelle,

After I reset Wifi to Channel 6 yesterday (10.06.2024 08:40:16) there were no major changes or problems during the rest of yesterday.

I'm not sure what counts as a "Reboot" but there was no ADSL down/up event at 03:30 as had been expected but Channel Hopping every half an hour began at 04:30

After 08:05 there were no more Channel hops, the only other event of note was:

There were Channels Hops before this but no major issues were caused.  Is suspect the TPlink repeater had  a corrupt connection after the 06:57:07 Channel Hop to the congested Channel 1.

Hi Michelle,

The router has retained a connection all weekend and quickly re-established a connection after a power-cycle on Friday. So far so good. I am inclined to accept the erroneous 'Disconnected' message as another failing of the User Interface software (as I said, I think it began after the last firmware update) - and that it poses no threat. Other issues (insecure page and DNS fails) have almost disappeared.

However, I am distressed to find that you can no longer prevent automatic channel hopping. There is a nearby CCTV Wifi signal on Channel 1 (see attached screengrab - note, for historic reasons the TalkTalk router is labelled NETGEAR2000 and a repeater is labelled NETGEAR2000-EXT), whenever automatic channel hopping jumps to that channel - interference can cause my devices to lose connection - I would prefer to fix it to Channel 6 as the modem's UI would suggest is possible.

Here is an extract of last night's log file:

At this point most of my smart devices (inc Ring camera) were off-line - each with this repeating error in the log:

I thought the idea of Optimization was for the router to select a 'quiet' channel.

So, I manually reset Wifi to Channel 6:

After which all smart devices connected and no further problems were experienced.

I cannot allow this hit-and-miss reassignment of the Wifi CHanel to other congested channels to continue - the algorithm is clearly not doing what it should. Having previously experienced this problem, it had been resolved several times by action 'at your end'.

What would you recommend?

Hi Karl,

Yes, the DSL/WAN thing would make sense - I think the problem started after a firmware update but can't be sure.  As long as it's not malware sitting between web-page and router, I can live with that.  I can't see an option to turn off WAN connection anyway.  I get the same report whether I use phone or PC or any of the three browsers I have on each.  The router seems to be ok otherwise.

Regarding the 'insecure' warning on the community page, it now only shows up when viewing this topic (other threads are secure) using Firefox on my phone - other browsers are happy as is Firefox on the PC (it resolved issue after a while). I can't see it being a cache issue but I don't know enough about certificates to know if one can get 'stuck'.  Anyway, I don't see malware as being involved, that was my main worry. 

Might I ask you to check that the WiFi optimization does not change my channel settings on this new router?  I use a second network for CCTV on ch.1, so I like to keep the 2.4G connection on Ch.6.  Optimization had a habit of setting it to crowded channels (or ch. 11 which didn't work at all on the old 5364 router that I'd bought independently of TT).

I will see how things go over the weekend.

Do you have another browser on the phone, and does community pages show as HTTP in that.

The Internet Disconnected error is seen from both phone and PC.

The insecure HTTPS issue did show up when I factory-reset previous router (as in original post) but after a few days, it disappeared - now it's back with new router. Maybe it will disappear again in a day or two.  It's like the DNS errors in the log - they were back yesterday but have cleared up today .

Thanks Karl, I guessed that might be the case - I figured it's just the browsers overreacting to http addresses - I can set an exception.

 Now I  just need explanations for the erroneous 'Internet Disconnected' report and that this HTTPS URL is reported as insecure.

The router address 192.168 etc is only HTTP, and not HTTPS, this address of the router is only available via your local network, so either connected over Wi-Fi or wired direct to the router.  It does not indicate that your security has been compromised.

Second attempt.  Lost first because your site does not accept jpg files (they have to be jpeg).

Yes router arrived yesterday and was installed immediately. Good connection made first time.  But opening router home page, was met with warnings about it being Insecure and that there was no internet connection (despite it telling me the upload and download speeds and IP addresses).  As I write to his the padlock alongside the URL is crossed through and I am told this HTTPS site is insecure (see attachments).  This happens on both my phone and PC.  I am worried that my connection or system is compromised somehow - especially as I have been receiving new phishing emails on my Tiscali addresses since I raised this topic.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I notice in the log that just after 3am, Upnp was activated followed by the message "TR-069 connectivity to (acs.talktalk.co.uk) has failed" many times .

My browser is reporting this page is insecure.
